similar drawl but ludacris has more drive

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

they flow the same! but ludacris is way more charismatic. i read this del interview in some wack magazine like elemental or fader or something, where del was talking abt how his dad gave him a self-help book abt how his music actually effects people's lives and shit, and then ludacris was on funk flex's car show acting like he's upset while funk shakes his hand and delivers a 69 cutlass supreme convertible

peter $.., Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

charisma is indeed a big differnece, but the del i've heard feels kinda sluggish too. If Del ever rushes the beat like Luda does I haven't heard it.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

but its not just the drawal, it's the structure of their verses, and the "goin' toe to toe with an enchantreSS"/"i got a MIDGET hangin from my neckleSS". they both have this expansive style that i can't quite describe!

peter $.., Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Del's more snotty, Luda's more cocky. If that makes any sense. And they both use their inflections a bit differently -- Del's seem a lot more random, fat-epileptic-kid-on-a-seesaw nyeah-nyeah stuff (though it settled a bit after No Need For Alarm), and Luda's emphasis usually rides the beat more vividly to better chant-along effect.

I don't think Luda's a huge fuckload better than Del, but Del has never, ever done anything as great as "What's Your Fantasy". And I can definitely imagine him doing a better "you smell bad" dozens-rhyme than "If You Must" (which is still hi-larious). But I cannot, even at knifepoint, think of anything Luda's said that's stuck with me as much as "with my headphones slammin', playin'/Iron Maiden/sleepin' in the lobby of the Days Inn" (from "Phoney Phrancise").

(and Del once closed out a Mpls. show by having his DJ play the Chemical Brothers' "Orange Wedge". Fucker didn't rhyme over it, but still.)

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

well if their relationship isn't father-son, what is it?!

peter $.., Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a special love of Del, ever since my friend would play the fuck out of No Need For Alarm in high school. he was the first mc I listened to who regularly rhymed whole phrasaes a la "funky homosapien/monkeys i will make of men"

now the urgent/key question: who'd sound better rapping in German?

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if i had any del or ludacris i'd listen to it to make sure, but their similarity in my memory is uncanny. :(

someone said best in german is dizzee rascal, obv

peter $.., Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

But Deltron 3030 was so much fun! more fun then anything luda's done. way more!

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see the resemblance but I can't say I've followed Ludacris very far. Del isn't as charismatic but, as cliched as it sounds his whole M.O seems to be to please himself, like the class clown who's happy as long as he's making himself laugh. No Need for Alarm's title track, case in point - It's somewhat cerebral and measured but coupled with the snottiness(great description btw) he creates some dynamics that were novel at the time, running rings around rather than blasting his proverbial buster bogeymen. Del's aggression isn't often leavened by any oppressive sense of "Reality" but he doesn't give off that smarmy undie vibe that would turn me off (having a fruitful running debate w/ a guy at work re: great rappers needing street elements in their music, apropos of not much). And that song about video games is in the fun hall of fame, watch your mouth.

tremendoid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree w/ Del not being charismatic...the first thing I thought when I heard him flow (I think it was..."If You Must") was how hooky his voice was. It made me want to hear more. I think Del's had a great career, a backpacker in the cool sense, before backpacker meant white-anticon-fuxxx.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 16 September 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What the hell is going on here?! They don't sound alike, and Del kicks the crap out of Ludacris!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 16 September 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't sound alike. Del and Ludacris have actually had really comprable careers in my mind...in fact, they seem to have had very similar career arks, albeit one in a underground, backpacker way and one in a lewd, stripclub way. But they're both fucking awesome, a fucking awesome case of appz and orgz

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 16 September 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Also anyone who hasn't heard Del's "Eye Examination" is missing out on some classic braggadocious.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 16 September 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

J Rock otm - No Need For Alarm is hip hop golden age CLASSIC
