Do you clap along to music at home when you are really enjoying it?

I do, I'm ashamed to say.

I was just clapping to Bukem!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

do you clap along at clubs? on the 'on' beat?

HKM, Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

clap along? I just pogoed around the room to the We Are Glitter mix of Goldfrapp.

ugh this is a very stereotypically "Ronan" post.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Clap? No. I guess I do everything but clap.

strom (strom), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Clapping alone in a room to music seems kind of funny. What if you walked in on your mom clapping along to the radio?

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

No

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Dominique's post confirmed everything I have always feared about my psychological heritage.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I never clap, but recently I have found myself sometimes dancing around. Clapping seems kinda like a piece of Trident to dancing's ice cream sundae

Comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago)

PINNACLE OF DORKESTRY

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

I just spac out generally.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago)

At my previous job, my boss would make a habit of ironically clapping to the beat of each song (which would usually be some bland world fusion or current reggae).

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

There are only three songs I clap to:

Archie Bell & the Drells, "Tighten Up"
The Association, "Along Comes Mary"
Porno for Pyros, "Tahitian Moon"

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I sometimes clap (or more lazily snap) the clave rhythm when I'm listening to salsa. (I also sometimes tap it, and other rhythms, out with whatever I have in my hands.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I also dance at home sometimes too, of course.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I also "snap" as well as "clap". I also perform what I can only describe as "flank-slapping", where I hit the sides of my thighs while dancing. Sounds strange, but it works for me.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I listen to music a lot when I'm cooking, and often snap my tongs on the beat.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't think that I clap, but I whistle like a motherfucker.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

You can listen to music AND whistle without ruingin your enjoyment of it? Clapping is very much a physical response to music for me, as opposed to a melodic one.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Or rhythmic, I should say.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

My brother-in-law whistles along to his faves because he's too shy to do anything else, ie dance, clap or even snap. It's his one annoying habit but he seems so happy when he does it, I never complain.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Almost never. Altho I've been known to snap fingers, tap empty wine botttles with a pen, rattle salt-shakers or something similar when I'm listening to something (usually discoid) that could benefit from more percussion. Rarely in the presence of other people, unless alcohol is involved.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Hell yeah, and I dance.

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I often whistle along, and the louder the better. I will whistle at intervals above and below the music, sometimes making nice consonant harmonies but more often very dissonant ones (intentionally) -- especially with tunes I love and know well, maybe too well. Doing this makes them interesting again.

Obv I try to do this only when I'm alone

Comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

i hate when people clap along at concerts and they're all so fucking off the beat that it ruins whatever beat or syncopation the band/musician was planning on accompanying the song

clapping should be left for either hoedowns or cheering at the end of the song

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I understand this sentiment but I've forced myself to tolerate almost any behaviour people display at concerts if they're clearly having a great time -within reason, of course. Otherwise we could all just go home and watch a dvd.

This also includes jumping around, bumping people because you're dancing or just plain excited, singing or yelling noisily (within reason), waving arms, etc.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago)

I whistle involuntarily a lot.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I never clap. It had never even occurred to me to clap.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:33 (twenty years ago)

i hate when people clap along at concerts and they're all so fucking off the beat that it ruins whatever beat or syncopation the band/musician was planning on accompanying the song
This wins the OTM Award of the Day. People with no rhythm must be stopped, they are a serious thread to musicians and listeners everywhere.

And I don't clap because usually there's a perfectly good table or floor to pound on.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Actually I do occasionally do a quick one-two 'clap clap' at certain exciting moments, but I never sit at home clapping along for any prolonged period.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I've never felt as weird as I do now. I do it for whole songs! When I am alone or otherwise!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I clap, but not usually in time with the beat on the 2 and 4 or whatever, usually just if there's a big climactic chord or snare hit or something, I clap once right then like BLAMMO! THAT'S THE SHIT RIGHT THERE! Then I wiggle my ass.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

It's not a default mode, I have to be pretty excited first.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

If there is a distinct clapping part in the song, I might clap along with it. Like "I Want Some" by the Make-Up.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

People who start clapping along at gigs make me irrationally angry. Especially cos they all lose the tempo after about 8 bars and then don't know whether to stop or keep going. That sort of shit should be reserved for TV Variety Shows and senior citizens' knees-ups.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i am more of a foot tapper but i will act like a clown to distract my gf. pulling down my pants and flashing hand shapes at her is good times

kephm, Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Music fascism should be resisted at all costs. Could you just move away, perhaps?

I can't resist clapping along to "Slaveship" by Josh Rouse, though it's a bit cutesier than I usually can tolerate.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

i've got to compete with the cats

kephm, Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I play the rhythm on whatever's handy that works remotely like a drumstick (I've gone as far as poker chips).

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Thea OTM. UNSHACKLE MY CLAPPIN' HANDS!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I clap, even to music I don't enjoy sometimes. It's kind of weird flippity-flop clapping though, I do it to practice frame drum playing.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I do it for whole songs!
I don't find that aspect of it wierd -- I'll tap or bang or sometimes even air drum for entire songs too. But I don't clap.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't want to stifle anybody's spontaneous outburst of joy, it's just that at gigs it always seems so joyless and by the numbers, like the obligatory encore routine.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

That's probably because it's on the downbeat.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I've also been caught clapping to "Cedar Room" that arena-rock anthem bic-flicker tune by Doves, when it comes on the radio.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I clap very self-consciously, I should add. Like I'm saying "look at how much I am enjoying this music!". I drink a lot of caffeine.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

This thread is heartwarming.

I'm with Alba, it isn't something that will last a whole song. Sometimes I will do a quick clap thing in the middle of a song at some particularly exciting point. I'm just as likely to bang on the desk, though, and boy do I bang loud. Of course I'm usually drunk when this occurs.

I seem to recall actually banging rhythmically on a table in the presence of a lot of people once. I can't recall the occaision - just some small dive where there was a performance I guess. I am usually very shy and was kindof shocked at myself, but people seemed to think it was cool, anyway.

Bimble (bimble), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I think that I overdo a lot of things, and this is probably chief among them. I once played Ginuwine's "Pony" over and over so many times that Chuch Tatum screamed at me.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I air drum. People make fun of me for it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I air drum, tap my feet, sway my head. All those things, on my own in my room. But not clapping along. That's just demented.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

oh

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:25 (twenty years ago)

what is the sound of one adam clapping?

kephm, Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:38 (twenty years ago)

this thread!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

What about soul-clapping?

(or booty clapping?)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago)

man, i do it all - dance, lots of air guitar, air drums, sing, clap. i made this pop mix with abba and ace of base and andrew wk and britney and hanson and "funkytown" and prince last week on my computer, and just drank and danced while my roommate played super nintendo. best night ever.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I used to drum on my knees a lot.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:05 (twenty years ago)

ppl clapping at the end of a movie is quite strange...but I think we've done a thread on that. Earlier this year I went to see berio's electronic music being played in this hall with (apparently) nice accoustics (not v echho-y but apart from that I'm not quite sure what makes for gd accoustics for that type of music) and ppl clapped to loudspeakers at the end.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm just glad that Thea gave a name to "flank-slapping".

southern lights (southern lights), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I clap when the song is finished, generally in a polite way. I rarely whistle. Sometimes the boys and I do a mexican wave if its, say, a Wiggles CD.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I'll clap (softly, mind... it's more of a pat-a-tat-tat) if it's a Diwali rhythm... otherwise generally not. My forte is genre-inappropriate jazz improv solos... whistled.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:01 (twenty years ago)

yep i'm prone to clapping. i also do airdrumming quite a bit.

gem (trisk), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:02 (twenty years ago)

I have danced and rolled around on the floor and sang and jumped up and down and squealed and all sorts of other shit, but never clapped. Clapping seems like a particularly stick-up-arse British-reservation way of enjoying music, Adam - are you feeling homesick? No one's there, so why clap when you can FREAK OUT?

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Nick you've never seen a line of black folk do a soul clap?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Not AT HOME ON THEIR OWN, no.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm having images of Adam reservedly applauding in a polite manner when a song finishes, I guess.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:35 (twenty years ago)

"Oh yes, that Buken number was splendid *clap clap clap*, I think now I shall play some Blur, they ahev written some marvellous songs over the years."

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:36 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but adam is a funky dude!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Clearly not when he's alone.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

what makes you think hes alone?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

"Oh mother, MOTHER, come hither and assail your ears with this wicked bit of Eski Beat, oh *clap clap clap*, does it not lift your spirits so?!"

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:42 (twenty years ago)

bwahaha

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:43 (twenty years ago)

"Oh Dizzee, I appreciated that very much indeed! *clap clap clap* Perhaps I should write you a small note of thanks? Yes, yes I shall do so with great haste!"

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:46 (twenty years ago)

I have been known to clap but only to "Oh My Bride" by the Deadly Snakes or any Boston tune from the first LP

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy, I think you are getting the wrong idea about this clapping thing. We're not talking about the careful meeting of soft palm with opposing soft palm, we're talking about full on hardcore arms-wide hand collisions like Greek gods going bowling with meteors. There's even some jumping (no, LEAPING) involved on occasion.

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago)

This is becoming like that "hand shape" thing that I could never quite explain to people on ILE. The internet's extreme physical limitations laid bare.

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm clapping, right now.

no music, though.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago)

quite often.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 18 September 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

i like watching clapping people who are tired of clapping.

bangor, Sunday, 19 September 2004 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Like if you are clapping for an encore but you actually don't want to hear any more music.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Monday, 20 September 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
I like the reference above to "ironic clapping," I have a friend who does this constantly, it's a whole different kind of clapping, I think.

Richard K (Richard K), Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm a compulsive tapper and air drummer. i air drum to cradle of filth and disco tracks. i tap to everything else... sometimes i even TYPE in time with music.

sad, isn't it?

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

never have , never will but i admit i did the ymca last night, unfortunately it was to "macho man."i got laughed at.

village idiot, Sunday, 5 June 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm not above clapping along if the music takes me there. I'm more prone to just plain dancing.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

This is such a great thread. It's fun to clap along to songs that have an actual fun clapping part. More Than A Feeling works well for this.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

has no one mentioned "emo clapping"? (i dunno, someone told me it was emo in like 1998) where you clap one palm against chest, presumably while the other hand is holding a cigarette?

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

i have been doing a lot of solo dancing in my lounge room of late. i keep stumbling across cds that make me want to dance around, it's great. less clapping though.

gem (trisk), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was about clapping in approval at the end of songs, which would be disturbing.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
i tend to hit things while pretending to be on some kind of beat

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

this clapping business has me literally rolling on the floor laughing, for real

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

That's probably because it's on the downbeat.
Jordn is, of course, OTM.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes, when I'm clapping on the downbeat, my hands miss each other.

ratty, Friday, 30 December 2005 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think somebody told me some story about Duke Ellington trying to stop his audience from doing this.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

After feeling like a loser all day, i figured clapping might help. I just tried clapping, and i felt more like a loser. Thanks.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps you're clapping with a glum expression on your face, Tape? The facial impression is very important. If you really want it to cheer you up, adopt a delighted mien. A very good model to study in the correct expression while clapping is Greg from Thw Wiggles:

Imagine if you had that on a poster on your bedroom wall. Imagine if it were the first thing you saw every morning when you woke up. You'd feel great, wouldn't you?

ratty, Friday, 30 December 2005 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

Where can I order it?

Tape Store (Tape Store), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

From their website. But get mum or dad's OK first.

Everybody clap
Everybody sing ( la la la la la )
Bow to your partner
Then you turn around
Hands in the air
Rock a by your bear
Bear's now asleep ( Sh Sh Sh )

ratty, Friday, 30 December 2005 23:03 (nineteen years ago)
