The Liz Phair one is called "Jealousy." Amazing lyrics in that one -
"Standing on the corner watching the ladies pass by
Imagining me behind your eyes
And what did I see?
I saw hips, I saw thighs
I saw secret positions that we never try
I saw jealousy"

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry to get off-topic, but is Hey Jealousy really about jealousy? it's more about being lonely and pleading and drunk and not wanting to vomit on your ex-girlfriend as you beg her to take you back. maybe jealousy of the past? i dunno, it seems like that old songwriting trick of substituting a word for some girl's name in the chorus (or a girl's name for a word in the chorus), an egregious crime of which the gin blossoms are guilty quite often (keli richards, alison road). great song, but i always thought the title and chorus were the least remarkable or representative things about it.

Jealous Again - The Black Crowes

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Jealous" by Gene Loves Jezebel

Ross, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This is just about the equivalent of asking for Songs About Love. All of Soul, Blues and Country to thread. For starters: Bill Withers - "Who Is He and What Is He To You?"

briania (briania), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded "I Want You" by Costello as being the best tale of jealousy... and paranoia. Least best heard when you are both jealous and paranoid.

"Did you call his name out as he held you down?"

How about "all I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit" - Half Man Half Biscuit.

Coffee_Cake, Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the help - Listening to Marianne Faithfull now - brilliant. Club Nouveau's "Jealousy" is also a prize...
Have my set together - listen if you like on www.eastvillageradio.org from 8-10pm EST tonight... Wish I had the Costello...and others. Jealousy is ungoing, however. "Everybody's doing it!" - M. Fishbeck

Sun Green, Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Why'd you do it? Why'd you suck his cock?

SexyDancer, Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just read this thread to see how long it would take someone to post "Hey Jealousy".

One post, not bad.

true. if anything, "found out about you" by gin blossoms is about jealousy...

Yeah, I was sort of wondering about that the other day. I think both your points are likely--jealousy of the past is definitely a possible solution, jealousy of perhaps a new guy--jealousy of being new in general, of being able to have a fresh start ("if I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago, I might be here with you").

Also, it's just a great sounding title and chorus chant. It implies a lot of emotion in an off-kilter sort of way without being too intrusive to the song's content. I think either interpretation is more than enough of a justification for the song's title.

However, no, I wouldn't necessarily say it's a song about jealousy.

Sort of a new one, but "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers did a number on me after my break-up.

"I’m coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his—chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, let me go"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, a Killers lyric. I'm speechless. Johnny we must be the only two people left alive willing to admit we like(d) them. I saw them live a few weeks ago and was rather impressed by the singer's...well-dressed restraint. No one can convince me that guy was out to be a rock star or took himself too seriously. It's a sad state of affairs when some band from Las Vegas writes catchy tunes better than any Brit bands have for years...but I don't wish to derail this thread.

Alex, "David Watts" was an excellent call. I was trying to think of songs to do with romantic jealousy specifically and that one wouldn't have occured to me.

So how about Nick Drake's "Which Will" off the top of my head?

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 17 September 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

--break thread--

Sure, I like the Killers. Hot Fuss is a decent record, if not a teeny bit too stylized. I just listened to "Mr. Brightside" about 300 times while driving around town after midnight wondering what may or may not be happening as the ex was enjoying a getaway weekend with her new boy.

It's pretty much behind me now, though.
