late-breaking albums that will make your year end list

Conteplating the best of 2001 becomes difficult when an album you recognize as great comes out in December. No time to really digest and reflect. Has this happened to you lately? What are some recent releases (like last 2 weeks) that will rank among the year's best?

For me it's the new Flanger Outer Space/Inner Space. Not sure when it comes out (if it has yet) but god, this is a great album. Much improved over the last.

I don't think Ulrich Schnauss or Ulf Lohmann will crack the top ten, but I really like both of their records. I've constantly played the last track on the Schnauss record for the last two weeks -- it's like an update of Boards of Canada's "Everything You Do Is a Balloon" with a total Cocteau Twins rip-off of a spangly melody in the latter half.

Rotoscope, Great Curves

Lloyd Cole's 2 new LPs are my favourite LPs of the year, and I haven't even seen them yet, let alone heard them.

I don't know about albums -coming out- in December, but as far as things I am just hearing, Dntel is full of possibilities .. this Champagne Kiss record is also really great (the kids formerly in Camera Obscura .. hard post-punk with an emphasis on walls-of-sound and sexy sampling)

likewise, the Appleseed Cast 'etherialemo' double-album is kind of impressive, though ultimately not quite year-end-list quality.

Pinefox, I really would like to know an artist I could trust as much as you trust Lloyd. Aren't the best records always the ones you have not yet listened to?

Probably.

The new Papa M, Whatever, Mortal

Jeff, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

based off that first single, i'm most curious about the rest of that Mystikal album.

Still have to hear stuff that was released in October though, like the rest of Dismemberment Plan, or things never acquired, like the whole of album of Cannibal Ox. My list will not be definitive even for my own satisfaction.

The new De La Soul.

dan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the new de la is terrible. haven't heard the new wu yet, looking forward to it though. also new ghostface.

ethan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

guess it's a good thing i didn't include the new de la in yr package then.

jess, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Ghostface definitely makes my list.. seek it out as soon as possible, ethan. Shit's type funky!

Bobby D Gray, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well i've only heard it once, it could've grown on me and i'd appreciate it as a de la completist anyway, but yeah. I WANT THE NEW GHOSTFACE, it's time to draw some more cartoons dammit!

JoB, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything I've heard from the So Solid Crew and De La Soul albums (sorry Ethan!) have been excellent, and I still have to pick up Dub Taylor and find Kelis.

Super Furry Animals "Rings Around The World". This record has been saving my life the last few days.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is the neil halstead album out soon? i saw a single with two album tracks so i imagine the lp is to follow soon? that will likely rate high with me.

keith, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm interested in the Jay-Z Unplugged w/the Roots.

Jordan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually listening to it as i type for the first time. Best live hip hop album ever? (although that's not so big of an accomplishment)
