so, where do they come from and why do about 80% percent of them seem to be fucking brilliant?

i was just listening to billy ocean 'going gets tough' and even thats good a really god bass noise. i got thinking about this cos there seemed to be a glut of garage tracks that have this really 80's bass noise, er cant think of any examples btu they were what i call betty boo bass sounds, ie doing the do styl.e so how did she (or namelss producers) get this bass sound? what were the synthesizers/keyboards that created the funky elecrto 80's bass sound - cos no matter how trashy pop you go, they all have wicked bass sounds! even this paula abdul 7" ed just bought me which was intriguingly derivative = good for mixing...

Well for most electro tracks,It was a DX-7 combined with a Roland Polyphonic analog (usually a Juno but sometimes a jupiter as well) run through some of the digital effects that had just come out. The sequencing was usually done on a fairlight (most elctro acts used actuall studio's unlike today where most dance acts record in their own project studio).
