....what's really the difference?

Mike Judge, Friday, 17 September 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Public Enemy made records that were actually enjoyable to listen to.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

besides what alex said, i always had the impression that chuck-d never REALLY hated whitey -- to the extent that he hailed farrakhan, it was more b/c he thought that some of his ideas wr2 black self-empowerment were worthwhile (if not necessarily the KILL WHITEY bs -- and i dunno what he thinks about all that mothership/aliens horseshit that NoI likes to peddle). other than the nation of islam smack-talking, chuck-d seemed like a pretty typical liberal.

professor griff was another matter altogether ...

SS = Sister Souljah

Ray Cappo, Friday, 17 September 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't it Sistah Souljah who attempted to stem the tide of black-on-black crime but calling for more black-on-white crime?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Skrewdriver inadvertantly led to the creation of nu-metal by intentionally misspelling their name. Plus the white power bullshit.

PE wins of course.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Put it this way: if Skrewdriver made a version of "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos", they'd be the guards shooting the prisoners in their cells.

wetmink (wetmink), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"....what's really the difference?"

There's a whole world of difference!

Public Enemy are black and they sell loads more records.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Public Enemy have never, to the best of my knowledge, expressed any great admiration for Adolf Hitler ... a plus point in my book

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Public Enemy are actually fairly significant, musically and otherwise - Skrewdriver are more like a Morris dancing act or something

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Public Enemy have never, to the best of my knowledge, expressed any great admiration for Adolf Hitler ... a plus point in my book"

Fair enough; but then, by the same token, Skrewdriver have never, to the best of my knowledge, expressed allegiance to Louis Farrakhan and The Nation Of Islam, who preach, amongst other things: that white people were invented in a laboratory by a mad scientist and their sous are posessed by The Devil; that people of mixed race consequently have no souls; that AIDS was invented by Jews to wipe out black people; that Kentucky Fried Chicken is run by the Ku Klux Klan and contains a drug to make black people infertile; and that they've been in touch with aliens (all of whom are black, naturally) who very shortly are going to come down and take all the black people off to live happily another planet before they destroy this planet and burn everyone else who's still on it alive.

So that's one point each in each in my book.

"Also Public Enemy are actually fairly significant, musically and otherwise - Skrewdriver are more like a Morris dancing act or something".

LOL! OK, fair point, advantage Public Enemy.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i love this recent meme of EZ-swapping entire cultures with each other to "prove" some stupid sh*t like "reverse racism" or something. like "huh, huh, why can black people say 'nigga' and i can't, that's obviously racist thinking." no. let me explain. when i punch my friend mikey in the arm it's because i like him. when i punch you in the arm it's because i hate you. isn't it kerrazy that the same exact thing can mean two different things depending on the context?? WHOA!!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

To even come up with an expression like "reverse racism" shows some extraordinarily muddled thinking.

All racism is equally vile and hateful.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i think whoever stared this thread need to have shit stuffed through their letterbox, their windows put in, their businesses torched and to live in fear of receiving a fucking good kicking every time they walk down the street. this should just about explain the difference.

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha WOW! Every time I think I'm done with thinking about NoI, someone posts something that makes them fantastic again!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Not the same Mike Judge who gave us "Beavis & Butthead" and "Office Space," surely.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

both mike judges rule on a nearly equal plane of existence. my old hardcore band was playing a house show. the demographics of our band broke down to two jews, two irish, and one korean and we had a good humor about it. so we decided to play a skrewdriver cover at this house as a joke and the kid who owned the house got all salty and banned us from playing there.

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

But were you covering a Skrewdriver song from before or after the band metamorphosed into a bunch of Nazis?

Anti-Social ((for example) isn't a bad song in a neanderthal kind of way.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

here comes de judge...

it was anti-social. i don't think there's anything particularly offensive about it either. i think he was angry because our fat friends were congesting the basement.

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that "Government Action" on a compilation, somewhere...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got 2 or 3 things by (pre-nazi) Skr*wdr*v*r.

I'm not going to throw them away because they are by the pre-nazi incarnation; but I certainly wouldn't sell them or give them away because that might give the nazi incarnation more publicity.

Logically of course I shouldn't even be mentioning them on a public forum for the same reason - so I shall refrain from doing so any more.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost bought the 45rpm album, as I was always a sucker for a novel format. But I saw their ugmugs and thought better of it...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(.. which was obviously pre)

btw, he (and by definition they) be dead now anyhow, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Stuart is. The band (although obviously no longer featuring any original members in a Dr Feelgood stylee) are still going I believe.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Stuart wasn't in the 'pre' version, was he?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Stuart was in the band from their original incarnation as a Rolling Stones covers band called Tumblin Dice (that's why they recorded "19th Nervous Breakdown" as the B-side of "Anti Social")

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know anything about Skrewdriver, but from what I gather, it seems like Public Enemy, despite some iffy perspectives (pro-Farrakhan, homophobia, antisemitism), had a lot more moral complexity and confusion in their lyrics. A lot of times, Chuck D seemed more baffled than pissed off.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The tale was the NF wanted a band, approached Sham 69, given the br, approached skr, they went yeah.

What was the offer like? "Be our poster boys! Become the most hated person possible..."

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Not quite how I understand it: the way I heard it was the band split up for the susuakl reasons. Ian Stuart either developed or had always had NF sympathies and subsequently became a fully paid up member. The NF persuaded him to put a new band together. I hadn't heard that they'd aproached Sham first but that certainly makes sense.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"susuakl" = an extremely unusual way of spelling "usual"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark Radcliffe was never in Public Enemy

coco, Friday, 17 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Which one of them gets the point for that 'though?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

no points
just an observation

also, I have never seen any member of skrewdriver's cock

coco, Friday, 17 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

So there were loads of ex-Sk bandmembers that can't tell their kids about their brush with fame, or whatever, cuz of I.Stuart's subsequent career.

Wasn't MRadcliffe's take in the book basically that the guy was a 'nice chap, polite etc, never showed any 'hate' of that or any other kind'? Although he had a different name in the book If I recall correctly...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah ... pretty much. 'He did that with an entirely different line-up. Seemed nice to me. We never suspected. If we had, we all would have been off.'

come to think of it, I thought it was a different name, too

coco, Friday, 17 September 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"So there were loads of ex-Sk bandmembers that can't tell their kids about their brush with fame, or whatever, cuz of I.Stuart's subsequent career."

Phil Walmsley seems to be quite upset about it all but Grinny doesn't appear to be too bothered at all.

"Although he had a different name in the book If I recall correctly... "

Apparently he was christened Ian Stuart Donaldson.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the book is in the garage. Later..

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

An old radio-station-mate of mine figured out that you could play "White Power" and "Fight the Power" simultaneously and they'd more or less beat-match. He dined out on the story for years.

Alex Ross on a semi-legendary incident at the same station: "Once, they followed up my heartfelt tribute to Herbert von Karajan with Skrewdriver’s rousing neo-Nazi anthem “Prisoner of Peace”: “Free Rudolf Hess / How long can they keep him there? We can only guess.” Touché."

I am very fond of Skrewdriver's pre-racist-period "Anti-Social." And a lot of the lyrically vile stuff does, in fact, totally rock, like it or not, although I'm sure they weren't about to mention the massive debt they owed to Chuck Berry.

But Public Enemy are INESTIMABLY better.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Public Enemy tried to win over a white rock and metal audience by dueting with Anthrax!

Screwdriver has failed to release their rock rap combo to get the hip hop crowd on their side!

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Friday, 17 September 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

main difference - PE, despite some of their messages, has black AND white fans. Skrewdriver does not.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Given how I feel about humainty, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't at least ONE black Skrewdriver fan. (Actually, the best way to undermine racists is to appropriate all of their shit and declare it awesome.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid to slsk this "Anti-Social"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Um to the guy who suggested that PE's support of Farrakhan was comparable to Skrewdriver's support of Hitler...remind me, despite his anti-semitic leanings, when was the last time Farrakhan

KILLED SIX MILLION JEWS?!

These bands are not even on the same fucking level. At all. Like someone said upthread, if Skrewdriver covered "Black Steel," they'd be playing the prison guards, not escaping the prison.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I checked Mark Radcliffe's book, he has the lead singer down as "Des Roberts"...

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ask a Farrakhan acolyte about the Holacaust and I'm sure you'd get a different "interpretation" of that six million killed statistic.
If Skrewdriver covered "Black Steel" they'd more accurately be playing members of the Arayan Nation, i.e. white prisoners.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If you ask Chuck D about the holocaust I'm sure he'd affirm that it actually occurred, and would not dispute the statistic.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

A Brazilian brewery has been ordered to pay $49,000 (£24,570) to an alcoholic beer taster who claims the company failed to prevent his condition.

The man, who has not been named, said the company, Ambev, did not provide him with adequate health care to stop him from developing alcoholism.

He said that for more than a decade he drank around one and a half litres of beer each day.

But Ambev says that the employee was an alcoholic before he took the job.

The employee says he drank between 16 and 25 small glasses of beer during each eight hour shift at the company, and was also given a bottle of beer at the end of each shift.

An initial ruling favoured Ambev, which claimed the man was already an alcoholic.

But Judge Jose Felipe Ledur said the company was still negligent because an alcoholic should have never been employed as a beer taster.

He added that the man's alcohol dependency had worsened in recent years, and that he felt like drinking the same amount on holiday as he drank at work.

The company still has the right to appeal against the ruling, and decisions are often overturned in Brazilian courts.
