..and I'm about to eat my own brain.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite obviously.

They should have used the Fall's 'Telephone Thing'

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

well Alex you do work for the same company. Pull some strings.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

When presented with such a statement I will assume you are a)lying or b) hallucinating because such a concept does not compute in my brain.
Just incase you're giving an accurate account of real events, though, this is the part where I thank the powers that be that I don't watch television.

Really, it would have broken me. I might have vomited. I can't vouch for my own health or safety had I observed such a thing.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not lying, I promise..

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on you guys, say something interesting :)
Defend the Indefensible : Concert reviewers that complain about the setlist

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, no offense Barry, but other than the Cure connection, I can't see the relation between that thread and this one.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

CNN Headline News just used the Cure's "Other Voices" as intro music to a story about cellular phones.

Excuse me. I think I'll need a few dozen minutes of speechlessness to convey the pure WTF-ness of that idea.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, that sounds sorta cool to me, but they should have tracked the bassline under the whole story.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

EXACTLY. Also, all of NBC's new fall shows should use mid-80s Curs songs for their soundtracks.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

but they should have tracked the bassline under the whole story.

THEY DID

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I swear to fuckin' god, my jaw still hurts from it hittin' my computer keyboard....first came those drums and then...DUM-DUMMA-DUMM-DUM, DOOM-DOOMA-DOOM-DOOM-DOOM-DA DUM-DUMMA_DUMM-DUM,.... (you get the idea), then came the intro blurb, then they slowly faded the song into background, but never faded it out......inexplicably.

Imean "voices" "cellphone,".......I guess. But it seemed wildly esoteric for CNN (tho', to be fair, Anderson Cooper does use snippets of Television and the Clash on his show). Still. Odd.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, was it "Other Voices" or was it "Let Love" by Res which samples "Other Voices"?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Let Love" by Res which samples "Other Voices"?

I've only heard "They Say Vision" by Res, so I wouldn't know. But, if this was a sample, it rivals "You Can't Touch This" in it's wild appropriation.

Skinny Puppy's "The Shroud" always samples "Other Voices" (very briefly). This wasn't that either.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

always samples

ALSO samples blah blah...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't know that about "the shroud"...

i think this it's cool that cnn used "other voices". more moody bastard music in the news please.

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

gah delete "this"

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, no offense Barry, but other than the Cure connection, I can't see the relation between that thread and this one.
Sorry Bimble, it was far from a decent joke. Alex was complaining about the track selection ('setlist') for the cell phone ad ... ugh.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Alex was complaining.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

For us all, a sobering wake-up call.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing this did was force me to play faith again, and I'm now struck by just how much Angelo Badalamenti ripped off "The Funeral Party" for the theme to Twin Peaks. Surprising I never noticed this before.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, you're right! And I adore both too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see the big deal. An intern or production staffer is probably in his 20's or 30's and snuck the song in because he/she's a fan of the band. It's not like they used a Cure song to sell petroleum products or machine guns. And I think it is very immature to act like a jealous little baby when someone outside of your little circle is exposed to music that you happen to like. I, for one, am sick and tired of having to listen to the same old dumbed down, mindless rap during every other commercial.

Dumptruck, Friday, 17 September 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Only Bimble did this.
2. You're a racist.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Double Bass line, Ned ; )

kephm, Friday, 17 September 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I certainly hope that racism comment was a joke, because I was putting down the simple-mindedness of the rap genre, not of any specific artist's racial background. Knee-jerk overreactions have no place on ILM......oh, shit, wait a minute....

Dumptruck, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

My reaction to this thread, as I'm sure it was for some others, was mere shock. It had nothing to do with jealousy. If the song was popular enough to make it on the charts and the video was all over the T.V. that wouldn't be so bad - certainly Disintegration being popular didn't stop me from loving it, nor did it really upset me. But I do feel that using it as background music for a news story about cellular phones does cheapen it somewhat. It's very melancholy atmospheric music and I associate it with walking out in the country in the dark with my walkman. The idea that it would ever be used on television for any other purpose than just showing the video is just plain shocking to me.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

CLEAR CHANNEL SEARCH FUNCTION IS TERRFIYING.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hrm?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Networks have a Clear Channel search function, they just search on terms for song titles. Faith is in the WEA catalog.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Then you're saying the decision was random?

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

CNN is just getting cooler and cooler every day. simple as that.

acim, Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but how are they portraying Bush?

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

considering all of the negative attention he's gotten over the last year, I'd say they're portraying him as bad as can be expected.

This might come as a shock, but it's not the media's job to get people elected, impeached, arrested, indicted... It's the PEOPLE'S responsibility to take advantage of democracy, vote, learn to read, etc. Now, if the House and Senate Dem. leadership is weak (can you say, Tom Daschle?), then Dubya's going to leave a trail of evil unabated, regardless of what CNN says about him.

And, yeah, the Cure selling out stadiums all over the world and releasing greatest hits packages every two years.....well, hearing that song on CNN really 'cheapens' it for me, too.

Dumptruck, Monday, 20 September 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree. The media has absolutely no influence over how people vote whatsoever. People are too smart and well-informed in this country to let the media sway them. What kind of fairyland do you live in? The kind of fairyland where old Cure songs get played for CNN stories and it seems like the most normal, expected thing in the world to you? Do goblins live on your street too? Alice In Wonderland?

You are nothing more than a troll, and nothing you say here explains your over-reaction to this thread. I mean what was it exactly about it that ticked you off so much that it made you want to call people "jealous babies"? Must have really touched a nerve, eh?

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm shocked that anyone is shocked about this, in an era when everyone from the buzzcocks and the clash to the walkmen and the polyphonic spree are doing commercials, and when the average radio talk show has bumper music full of more underground rock history than most rock history books at your local barnes & noble. people who grew up in the '80s and the '90s are sitting in the producer's seats. what do you think they're gonna use?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just shocked because it isn't exactly one of the Cure's more celebrated tracks. It just seemed a bit incongruous being used by CNN's Headline News Channel....least of all as the bumper to a story about cell phones. Would I have been more shocked if they used, say, the Cardiacs or Cop Shoot Cop? Yeah, of course, but it's still pretty damn random.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 20 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Years and years later I realized that the local TV station had been using a piece of music by Durutti Column as background for weather stats and stuff when I was a kid...but at least it was just weather stats and not people *talking* over it. See, that's what I mean about cheapening it. Was "Other Voices" meant to be used as BACKGROUND MUSIC in the first place? And in the second place, does it work as background music for a news story about cellular phones? I think not, but hey, that's an artistic/aesthetic decision, and people are welcome to disagree. It has absolutely nothing to do with The Cure's popularity.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is it so surprising that someone who grew up listening to the Cure now has the job of picking music for CNN segments? "The media" isn't a bunch of dark-suited grown-ups--it's us, and people like us.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

...or at least, isn't JUST a bunch of dark-suited grown-ups...

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The NFL was using loads of Cure tracks a couple of years ago, not only because of Minnesota's Robert Smith. It's always down to some young production associate.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The PGA Tour has also used Cure songs in its telecasts, which isn't surprising. When I think of genteel privilege and country clubs, I often think of the Cure.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow Bimble, get over it. No one fucked your mom.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

and the Cure aren't even that obscure. now bring up more obscure bands and then we can talk.

acim, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

so does Robert have to give the ok on this?a few months back, i read an interview where he says, they did the HP commecial (w.pictures of you) or something in order to release the Bsides box...

kephm, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"The media" isn't a bunch of dark-suited grown-ups--it's us, and people like us

or maybe, just maybe, WE'RE a bunch of dark-suited grown-ups.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow Bimble, get over it. No one fucked your mom.

Dan, are you saying her womb just spontaneously preggered itself up? That might explain the self-regard though, hmmm....

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Bimble, go fuck your mother.

Dumptruck, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, I'll pass.

Bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be more worried when they use "All Cats Are Gray" for a hair-dye commercial.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Prayers for Rain" during a Midwest heat wave.
"A Forest" for a wildlife conservation piece.
"I Don't Know What's Going On" for the next George Bush press conference on Iraq.
"One Hundred Years" when somebody turns 100.

etc.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I cop to being abrasive but let's cut the outright mean shit out, okay?
