So I would like to buy some music for someone who recently fell in love with the Old 97s. I am guessing she already has all the Old 97s albums. Any recommendations? Maybe a side project or an album or band you are sure an Old 97s fan would love? She also like Rex Hobart on Bloodshot and earlyish Wilco. Thanks!

Split Lip Rayfield, maybe?

Assuming that she's into their twangier stuff:
Waco Brothers
X
Jason and the Scorchers
Pernice Brothers
Bottle Rockets
Neko Case
Bobby Bare Jr.

How about a Whiskeytown album? Strangers Almanac, Faithless Street both great; Pneumonia very good.

How about the Jayhawks? She may miss the Old 97s wit, but the spirit is similar.

And yes, Bobby Bare JR seconded

She does like Neko and the Wacos. I think Whiskeytown, which I adore, might be a little too sad for her tastes. Thanks for the suggestions.

Would Mekons be pushing it? She may thank you or she may hate you.
