Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 19 September 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba, I did French House! Sure Latin House and maybe one other were repeated as well.

Oops re: French House.

Yeah - Latin House was repeated by Disco Nihilist, but I pointed that out already.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'someday' isn't deep house, too simplistic, vocal and old

teh pow! (blueski), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But early deep house was mostly vocal: Robert Owens, Michael Watford and all... "Tears", "Open Our Eyes", "What About This Love"...? A long way from its later more abstract incarnation, I would agree.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

true, i just don't think of it as the older anthems as part of that sector - too anthemic for one thing! 'I'll Be Your Friend' is perhaps the best example of the junction-point as that seemed way ahead of most other stuff at the time, Owens one of the only male deep-voiced vocalists committed to the genre.

teh pow! (blueski), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

bojan (bojanm), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Jacob is that different from 'Let Me Bang' - how could i forget this when it was a big part of why 'Rubicon' blew me away so much the first time i heard it?!

teh pow! (blueski), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(jess you are a curmudgeon)

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's different from "Let me bang" in as much as any Deeon track is different from any other Deeon track!

And yeah, that Rubicon edit has bits of both on it, or should I say they both share bits of the same vocal, but "Hit it from the back" is like slower and has a bigger kick. Either that or I'm horribly confused.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

dance music sure be havin' lots of sub genres!

Po-face Shocka (Ronan), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame those queer Europeans and their gay nuanced island existence.

Po-face Shocka (Ronan), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, are you suggesting that "Someday" is too anthemic to be deep and "I'll Be Your Friend" isn't?

"Flowerz," "Tears" and "Devotion" are my deep house trinity.

Rich (Rich), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

None of these are typical of what "deep house" usually means anyhow cos they don't have JAZZY BITS or BONGOS.

I propose Kenlou - "What a sensation" as a suitable replacement based on those criteria...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Icehouse!

Any subgenre that you can't provide a track for (and an explanation if asked) is disqualified.

Now, the only house song I know is 'The House Song' by The Beta Band which I don't think is house.

So, the onus is on you to describe it to me

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Rich, yes I am - i'm not sure people were even using the term deep house in the way we know it now until around ten years ago? 'Flowerz', 'Tears' and 'Devotion' don't really have the deep sound do they? i think of deep house as having a more dreamy, trance-like feel about it, with more layers of sounds subtly developing throughout, but not to the extent where it can be called progressive.

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha more layers of sound subtly developing throughout? Only sometimes.

My favourite deep house track: Powder Productions' "Skyline".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm... I was taking requests for "deep house" in Autumn 88. Agree that there's an appreciable difference between "Tears"/"Devotion" and Atjazz/Love From San Francisco/Digs & Whoosh, but we seem to be stuck with the one term for both genres, and the latter would probably claim to be working in the tradition of the former.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Silk did the Deep House (and definitive) mix of Ten City's "That's the Way Love Is" in, what, '87? '89? No bongos, jazziness, or even subtly developing layers there (since, really, Silk has forged a career out of being as blatant as possible -- and that's exactly why I love him).

I was actually thinking of this very subject (the definition of deep house) when at Guernica on Sunday for the deep house and classics party, which featured a lot of what we're talking about (esp. T-Diva's binary)...really, I think it comes down to murkiness, a darker, thicker stew of sound. That's the way I've always seen it really...back in the day, Kenlou and MK, for example, always struck me as deep, whereas the ID Records peeps (including Silk, who was almost entirely bright and crisp in the '90s) didn't.

Rich (Rich), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I had forgotten about Ten City's synonomousness with the term. multiple permutations of 'deep house' quite troublesome then clearly.

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)
