by Julie and Gordon. The answer song to jilted john.
Have you heard it? I want it to be great.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 20 September 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I have. It was a huge hit in its day. It is GRATE, rest assured. Also, if you can find it, there's a couple of TOTP performances which are equally bent.

So glad you mentioned this. "Jilted John" is a favorite -- I'd heard that there was an answer song but never knew what it was called or thought to look for it.

snazz, Monday, 20 September 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. I've heard the Jilted John, which is great. Recall seeing a 7" sold on ebay awhile back (with a few other 7"es from '78-82) that was listed as being by Julie & Gordon. I bid but lost the auction, so that's as far as it went.

I think this should be on p2p - it's impossible to find.

I remember this, though I haven't heard it for a long time. It was on some ca$h-in "punk" compilation. It wasn't very good, I'm afraid. Better things are the b-side to "jilted john" I forget the title, but the lyrics went s.th. like:

"the kids are horrible/
and the house is dead smelly/
but it's all worth it 'coz when they go to bed
we start snogging on the so-o-fa/
yeah yeah I love sharon/
yeah yeah she loves me/
yeah yeah we love each other
...and we're so happy"

The Jilted John album is great as well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I own it. It is quite shockingly bad.

"Here we go, four-five-six, or summink like that, I dunno..."

My sides, my sides...

"I own it."

Me too.

"It is quite shockingly bad."

Not "shockingly" so, I wouldn't have said. If there'd been anything even remotely "shocking" about it that would have been a 100% improvment. In fact it's every bit as lame as anyone with even half a mind should easily have been able to predict.... which I suppose, since I bought it, must give some sort of insight into how well my mind was functioning in 1978!

Apparently Julie & Gordon were in fact Alan Blakely of The Tremeloes, his wife and a couple of friends.

They actually released two singles: "Gordon's Not A Moron" / "I'm So Happy To Know You" and "J-J-Julie (Yippee Yula)" / "Gettin' It Together".

So now you know.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that you cared of course.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

*I* care.

Jilted John is one of Martin Hannett's best productions - great guitar sound.

Now, Stewart, get on the Joy Div thread and answer the urgent and key question - did GOTHS exist in 1979?

On my way Doc....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember "J-J-Julie (Yippee Yula)". Shockingly, the chorus was set to the tune of the Hallelujah Chorus:

"JERR Jer-julie, yippee yula, yippee yula..."

Yes, that good.

Graham Fellows also wrote & released an "official" follow-up to Jilted John: "Fit For Nothing"/"Sold On You". Both were added to the CD reissue of Jilted John's True Love Stories.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Graham Fellows (just in case anyone who might be remotely predisposed to care doesn't actually already know this) is of course still touring and recording sporadically as John Shuttleworth.

"Pigeons in flight
I want to see you tonight"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll forward the proposition that Kim Gordon might not be as bright and creative as she is uptight and fussy.

"Better things are the b-side to "jilted john" I forget the title, but the lyrics went s.th. like:"

The b-side is 'Going Steady'. I've got the JJ 7", but not with the nice cover.

That was one Bernard Kelly, who was the real Gordon off the Top of the pops appearances. (he wasn't presented as such, but the name stuck..). "Fit for nothing" was not a hit. There was going to be a song before/instead of it, called something like "They do dough, don't dey" which is a scouse saying, or something.

Anyways, the unsold copies of "Fit for nothing" were covered in emulsion paint, glued in new pic bags and sold as "The Emperor's new clothes" by Gerry and the Holograms, as the world's first unplayable single...
