Think about it, won't you? Thank you.

I think about it everytime I see P Abdul, I love this song. I should get the record.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 20 September 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

No-one else ever knows what I'm talking about, I just wildly blather about how she had THIS ONE GREAT SONG etc, oh well.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 20 September 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

she also had "stright up", that was pretty great.

i used to make up dances in my bedroom to "promise of a new day".

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Spellbound is the best album of 1991. I am not even joking.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

She had lots of great songs. "Rush Rush" is one of the greatest cheezy ballads ever.

Even "My Love For Real" is great.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

stone-cold classic. written by peter lord and v. jeffrey smith of the family stand, who had a hit around the same time with the equally spellbinding "ghetto heaven."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of this song without thinking of how they scrunched the horizontal-hold in the video to make her look thinner. Give me "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" over this any day.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

As has been documented, I love me some early-90s-house-influenced-dance-pop. I heard "Promise" a couple of days ago while in a department store - I'd forgotten how good it was as, it didn't chart as well as her earlier singles.

It's worth mentioning that "My Love Is For Real" was a cover of a two-hit-wonder dance-pop act called Strike.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Spellbound was fucking horrible! "Straight Up", "Cold-Hearted" and "The Way That You Love Me" are where Paula begins and ends.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)
it did manage to hit #1 in the US. her last #1.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Blowing Kisses In The Wind" might get a pass because over the overzealous melodrama but very few things could restore the shine after enduring "Opposites Attract" (ergo all of the Spellbound material is at a disadvantage).

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rush Rush" is one of the greatest cheezy ballads ever.
Ain't that the truth. "Promise" never did anything for me.

I love the singles from her first album, though. "Straight Up" is just begging for a 2004 remake with someone like Ashlee Simpson on vocals. And since Paula's famous again due to American Idol, I have little doubt that it would be a big hit (again).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason "promise of a new day" always reminds me of "time it takes" by a'me lorain and the family affair, a one-hit wonder (and that wasn't the one hit) that no one, not even allmusic, remembers, from around the same era. both rockish, prince-influenced dancey things sung by hippie chicks (or, at least, singers who sounded like hippie chicks for that one moment). i love 'em both to death.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hippie Chicks! God, I think I miss Soho.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(At a bare minimum I miss looking at them; I saw them on a plane and WOW ARE THEY GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It's worth mentioning that "My Love Is For Real" was a cover of a two-hit-wonder dance-pop act called Strike.

Is it? Paula's came out a year earlier, didn't it? And didn't Paula have a co-writing credit on it (hazy memory based on the fact that I actually played the single a few weeks ago, yes).

There was a Euro-dance version of "Straight Up" this year. It was wretched.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm partial to "Rush Rush," even if it had nothing to do with Geddy Lee, Barry Sanders or Rush Limbaugh (who was still about a year away from becoming well-known when that song was on the charts...).

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If "Rush Rush" was a cute baby seal, I would be first in line to make with the clubbing.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU HAVE NO HEART. The violin! Even the fact that she was, probably, computerised to oblivion does NOTHING. This song taught me about romantic LOVE and criticism of it HURTS ME IN MY HEART.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The video starred Keanu. DEATH TO ALL.

I was thinking about the In Living Color parody "The Promise of a Thin Me" the other day. But not the original.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to Ned, I WILL NEVER EVER KNOW TRUE LOVE AGAIN.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Rush, Rush! I need to start a thread about songs that are kinda aboout the hard fucking. so deep, so deep, so deep inSIIIIIIIIIDE. Teh Quentin Tarantino "Like A Virgin" Secret Fuck Song Award.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't need those images in my head (especially since I imagined you saying that in your bizarro Sean Connery impersonation voice).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Strike covered Paula Abdul, not the other way round. to suggest so is laughable!

teh pow! (blueski), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i spent many a wild seed on fellow towel to this video as a boy

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

a creepy stalker who was stalking/ "secretly admiring" my old room-mate left us a "care package" that consisted of a 90 minute cassette that was just "Rush Rush" by Paula Abdul over and over

the horror, the horror . . .

Drew Daniel

ps: Strike's "You Sure Do" is a classic cheezy monsta of handbag house

Drew Daniel, Monday, 20 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rush Rush" sounds like it was sung by the Terry Jones character from the Sir Lancelot sequence of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" yet still manages to suck.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"A CERTAIN...SPECIAL...SOMEONE!!!!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hello people? Vibeology! oh alright...

teh pow! (blueski), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The world needs fewer odes to Paula's vibrator.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's not forget her ode to Emilio.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be funnier if Emilio had been the name of her vibrator, wouldn't it?

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Strike covered Paula Abdul, not the other way round. to suggest so is laughable!

Strike remixed Paula's version, hence my confusion.

*hangs head in shame*

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockists-at-heart hating on Spellbound and lauding the eternally overrated Janet-knockoff singles from Forever Your Girl = duddest of all duds.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Only track even worth a second listen on FYG = "Knocked Out" because it's not just "Pleasure Principle" chopped up and rearranged.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago)

For 8 years, she was paid millions upon millions of dollars to judge and give advice to aspiring singers.
