I can name at least one other person around here who used to feel the same way (maybe still does). As for me, I have the Rutles soundtrack in the proper reissue sense -- and the Shimmy-Disc tribute -- but all my Beatles are but mp3 and I've not listened to them in years.

Blue Suede Shubert is probably better than Roll Over Beethoven and Doubleback Alley still beats Penny Lane. Living in Hope is nowhere near as bad as Don't Pass Me By.

I have preferred the Rutles, but maybe only because the Beatles songs were so worn out. These days, I'm not really interested in either .. but when I first got the reissue with "Get up and Go" I was pretty excited.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Doubleback Alley" is good, but I certainly don't agree that it's better than "Penny Lane." Is that just anti-Macca bias??? (I'm just askin'.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No anti-macca bias. As mentioned, Penny Lane is just worn out through repetition and imitation. Just to even things up, I doubt many people would rather hear Imagine rather than Cheese and Onions.

Everything, Monday, 20 September 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If Madonna had sung Cheese & Onions with images of Iraqi casualties in the background, we'd all be congratulating her. So, Rutles > Beatles.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(X-post) Well, just for novelty sake. Doesn't mean that it's a better song, though.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine has insipid, impotent, childish lyrics. At least Cheese and Onions is obviously the work of adult.

everything, Monday, 20 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

So does "Wooly Bully."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What I mean by this is: If you like John Lennon, why not just appreciate it for what it is? It's quite a nice song; he meant well, etc.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Me, but I hate the Beatles, so it's not really a case of preference.

"let's be natural" can't top'Julia' sorry. i love dave225's vision though.

Who the fuck are the Rutles?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Innes from the Bonzo Dog Band's Beatles mockery group. There was a movie with Eric Idle playing the Paul character.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I like some of Innes' non-humor oriented Bonzo tunes a lot. Like "Quiet Talks and Summer Walks" on Keynsham--that's gorgeous.

T/S: "Get Back" versus "Get Up & Go"

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I think the Rutles was good but really, they were so close in their parody that I don't actually find their lyrics (or the film for that matter) very funny at all.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

"Let's be Natural" is like the beatles rather than a take-off. And is great, too.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

The lyrics aren't really supposed to be funny.

"A glass of wine with Gertrude Stein
I know I'll never share
But I don't mind
That's just the kind of cross each man must bear"

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, that reminds me, a friend of mine was talking about how you find yourself saying things that people are obviously too young to remember/ understand. He said he was talking to a guy who mentioned Tunbridge Wells and my friend immediately said, "Tunbridge Wells - the best place in the world for a sailor!" and the guy looked at him like he was nuts... or does no-one else here remember "Twenty Four Hours in Tunbridge Wells"?

I learned a lot of things from the Rutles' Wikipedia page today, like that 14 songs have had Lennon and McCartney added to the writing credits. Lawyers!

Turns out there is some kind of Rutles tribute band that seems to play Beatles conventions and such called From TheThem Rutles, I think.
