i saw pigface last night

this is a continuation of my thread "so i saw the fall last night" because i have had minimal-to-none exposure to both bands prior to seeing them live. i hate gothy industrial dance music. its lam0r scene and everything is annoying and just sounds like house music with metal riffage. i got free tix to see pigface and all i know about them is pil's martin atkins is the leader or whatever. anyway, pigface was actually really enjoyable live. martin atkins is totally cool british tough guy on stage. i compared them to being the industrial p-funk. people everywhere on stage switching off on insturments and live acts of lesbianism. i think he was actually going for the p-funk thing.

Poor old Marty -- still wallowing the shadow of METAL BOX. Pity he can't get on with life. Pigface onstage can be an interesting event. Pigface on record is always a dire, patchy affair.

i agree. all of the pigface recordings ive heard suck balls.

I tht MA was a terrible drummer on metal box but when I say this I am always told off roundly: what d'you guys think? Is he better now? Was he great then and I am a fool?

Martin Atkins didn't play on Metal Box - He DID play with PIL around this time but he's not on the record. A fine drummer live but a by all accounts a complete cunt of person.

Unless I'm mistaken, both Jim Walker and Richard Dudanski played drums on Metal Box. Unless I'm mistaken, Atkins played drums on The Flowers of Romance and This Is a Load of Crap, This Is a Load of Crap.

The Damage Manual, Atkins' supergroup of oldfarts, has had a couple good songs. Worth it enough to hear Wobble playing something that isn't ethno-fusion.

oh yeah y're right: PiL drummers = all spare wheels and none of 'em that great = interchangeable in my old brane

mark s, Friday, 7 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he didnt play drums at the show. just vocals and leather pants.

chaki, Friday, 7 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

leather pants = minus 25 points straight away!!

Andy K. wrote abot the Damage Manual being a bunch of old farts... Maybe... Maybe... But I've always found Geordie Walker's guitar work to be incredibly unique. Nothing before or since can really be compared to it. The man is in a class by himself. So, instead of complaining about their age, maybe we should be talking about their musical ability instead.

"Chickasaw" is my favorite Pigface song, and the only Pigface song I like (maybe because it doesn't sound too much like Pigface?), though Shonen Knife saying, "Fuck it up, Pigface" on the same CD is pretty good too.

I saw them live once, but I didn't take to them. (Probably my taste in music was shifting away from anything remotely like that by the time I saw them, and I shouldn't even bother writing about it, since I am probably too far out of sympathy with what they are doing.) I don't really enjoy the industrial dance stomp.

Martin Atkin's drumming on the Damage Manual is great (especially the Bonham shit on Sunset Gun). And Chris Connelly can be neat.

atkins seems to think he did play on 'metal box'. i know he's often claimed to have been shafted on album credits so maybe this is one of those cases. then again, maybe not - he has been known to tell the odd lie too.

he's a good drummer but he needs other good musicians around him (eg killing joke's 'extremities' - excellent album) but the current pigface line-up looks well dodgy and playing damage manual and murder inc. songs without geordie is neither big nor clever.

paul rangecroft, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about when they play NIN songs? the line up wasnt very amazing. guys from chemlab abd a black bass player with beatles hair.

chaki, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm surprised they're still going. Back in my more overt industrial damage days, I saw the late 1991 and late 1992 line-ups of the band and had a good time (interviewed the latter line-up -- Genesis P-Orridge talking about the Israeli intelligence services chasing after his family makes for bemused listening, as does Atkins and company roundly dismissing the term 'industrial' with reference to early Thompson Twins!). Connelly and En Esch at the earlier shows and Ogre at the later made it all fun, Rollins was wandering the audience at the latter one as well, which ended with a pretty kick-butt percussion jam. And I still have my patriot-colored "ASSHOLE" shirt, which these days seems more relevant than ever.

Apologies if offense was taken at the oldfart tag. I assure you it wasn't a complaint. And I happen to think they're a fine band. I did refer to them as a supergroup. Always liked Walker's guitar playing -- shame abt the rest of Killing Joke, tho...

Andy K., Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh -- and sorry abt the advanced tags.

Andy K., Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Pigface in your momma's underwear.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Connely's whole Bowie obsession always made him more interesting then your standard industrial growler. The fact that Chemlab is part of Pigface now saddens me.

bnw, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think connely was playing drums. im not sure. his name was on the bill though. there were two drummers. a man and a woman both with blonde dreads. i think its funny when you go see a suposed hardcore british band and theres guys on stage dressed in "football" gear.
