Bad News vs. Spinal Tap. Who's best live?

In terms of songs, records and film Tap must surely win hands down, But has anyone seen both bands live? Bad News played at Castle Donington in the mid-80s round about the time Spinal Tap were touring, I believe.

Spinal Tap played three seperate concerts on Canada Day! They were the perfect band to be introduced by Steve Anthony.

I once borrowed a live bootleg tape of Bad News off someone at school (a loooooooong time ago). It was a 'proper' concert by them, rather than the Tommy Vance in American football gear-intro'd Donington show from More Bad News.
I'm afraid it sucked, and it was heftily padded out with swearing-heavy covers of songs like Bohemian Rhapsody and My Generation.

Maybe a TS: Warriors of Genghis Khan vs Big Bottom thread would be more appropriate?

Bad News played Reading as well as Donnington. I wasn't there myself (I wonder if Mark Grout was?) but a couple of metal-heads I knew who were there said that actually they were surprisingly good.

I was there, and it was terrible. Vow Wow were loads funnier.
Big Bottom gets my vote.

Do the winners of this 'round go forward to play against The Darkness?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Before the Darkness there's a decider against Manowar...

How many of Bad News could actually play? Having seen A Mighty Wind, it looks like every single person in the This is Spinal Tap/ Best in Show axis is a highly accomplished singer/ musician, which you wouldn't exactly expect just from Spinal Tap alone.

"How many of Bad News could actually play?"

Vim Fuego (Ade Edmondson) was apparently quite a reasonable guitarist and Den Dennis (Nigel Planer) and Spider Web (Pete Richardson) were supposed to be a tolerable guitarist and drummer but Colin Grigson (Rik Mayall) was, according to all reasonably unbiased accounts, complete shit.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the bass line from Warriors... wasn't exactly the hardest thing in the world to play.

I really haven't seen Bad News and More Bad News for 15 years or so, and this thread is brining it all back. What's Lemmy's comment on them? Something like "a new high/low in mollycoddled mother-me instinct lowest common denominator rock n roll"?

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Lemmy: I thought Bad News set a new high in altruistic, self-indulgent, bullshit, mollycoddled, you know... mother-my-dark-instinct rock 'n' roll. I thought it was a piece of pimply shit from the worst kind of city ghetto, probably populated by winos, junkies and just general all-round f***-ups.

Not for the first time, I ask: when are they going to get 'round to releasing all the old Comic Strip episodes on DVD?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Schenker: Bad News? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Scheisse!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And when you bear in mind that he was the guy responsible for "Wind Of Change", he knew what he was talking about!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Def Leppard comments were rather pot-calling-the-kettle-black, too!

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I'd second that about the DVD releases. When was the last time Bad News was even on telly?

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

eighteen years pass...

I think Les McQueen was based on the lead guitarist tbh.

Meantime I got the new Cherry Red Bad News comp in the mail yesterday. Fun artifact!

Renia from 1974. This band is pretty good... no worse than Spooky Tooth.
