Totally generic looking comps which feature amazing stuff none-the-less! S/D

Inspired by picking up the amazing 2CD Ragga Sessions and then looking at the rest of the Sessions series and trying to figure out how the hell such a largely uninspiring series produced such an incredible collection of undercompiled Firehouse/Fashion dancehall rarities.

I once picked up a really *bad looking* compilation:

It was 'The Punk Generation' by Castle Communications. ie. cheap looking, bad colour-scheme, generic 'Sex Pistols' font, inner pages of front cover were blank, but the worst thing about it was that among the artists listed on the front was Sham 69 (with a photo, no less) and they weren't even on it!

But it had some great stuff: GLC, Infa-Riot, a fucking great Partisans song, Blitz... and other stuff.

the Jungle Mania comps (although cos they have to fit loads of tracks on they are - ugh - edited), Best of Jungle 4cd box (Low price music), Ultimate Drum & Bass Collection 4cd (Quality price music), Essential Drum'n'bass (Essential music at a low price), Space'n'Bass 12cd (Death becomes me)

half my collection basically.

Buy This Used CD, a Dutch East India compilation released ten years ago with Uncle Tupelo, Unrest, and Babe the Blue Ox on it among others. It was cheap, too, like five bucks.

Remember that controversy? Garth Brooks bemoaning the fact that record stores were selling used CDs without compensation given to the artists? Now, look at 'em. Ha. You won, Garth. I haven't bought a used CD in years, and yet, somehow your entire catalogue is still available to me for free.

Another Late Night - Zero 7

Looks like yet another coffee table music kinda lazy sunday nonintrusive inoffensive bollocks comp.

On listening, there's not a single dud track on it.

I thought of another one: the Reggae Greats budget series from Mango/Island is like a dozen respectable, but unexceptional greatest hits overviews of Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff, Lee Perry, etc. . . AND one amazing dub album by Sly & Robbie and a great live album by Gregory Isaacs!
