...also this dilemna...dcfc and isis play here the same night...who should i see?[having never seen either before]

william (william), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd see isis over death cab. i'd see "a tribute to foghat" over death cab as well, so you should get other opinions.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

man i wish i was seeing supersilent live. i'd settle for deathprod, even, but i don't think they'll be coming to knoxville anytime soon.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

dan::hehheh.
rog::funny thing is,so many bands don't cross the border for a vancouver date [ie hot snakes] because of the hassles. to read that supersilent are only playing 2 n.a. dates and that van is one of them is almost poetic justice, good karma...call it what you like.

william (william), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i hear ya - i've always avoided canada on tour myself. But good to see yall Canucks can finally enjoy you some live terror jazz drones!

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

supersilent is probably mindfuck live

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got tix for the SF date already, very much looking forward to it. Jaga Jazzist is playing here the day after as well before flying out east for a show in DC.

Avi (Avi), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to the SF show ... I live in Boston. I'm flying cheap-ass Jet Blue to see it (and to hang out for the weekend).

They should've done a longer North American tour, but for anyone who missed it, they just filmed a concert in Oslo that will be on DVD next spring. There's also a short .mov floating around SoulSeek.

savetherobot, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Supersilent are due in Seattle as well

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there any truth to the rumor that Supersilent were planning to release a live box set?

I would love to see them, but I don't know if they are worth going across the entire country to see.

Was there any truth to the rumor that Supersilent were planning to release a live box set?

They had talked about releasing a 10-CD live box set but I haven't heard anything lately, and I assumed that for now, the live DVD would take its place.

Note that 5 is a live album, with excerpts from different shows. They seem to record a lot of stuff but pare it down aggressively, so although they talked about that massive box set, I have a hard time picturing them releasing all the dead spots and bad ideas that would inevitably be part of a box set.

savetherobot, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the box set was edited down from 20 CDs to 10 CDs!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

According to ideologic.org, Supersilent is playing NYC with Khanate in mid-October.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, now that I look at Tonic's website, the show is on 11/8, and Khanate has been dropped from the bill. I might go anyway - depends on whether or not I like Supersilent. A friend has mailed me a bunch of their CDs, but they haven't arrived yet.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man Khanate and Supersilent together would be amazing

Avi (Avi), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG!

Pdf you have made my day.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
My wife is sick, so I've got an extra ticket for the SF show if anyone is interested.

Avi (Avi), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The SF date is with Jaga Jazzist, who are super awesome live. Should be a heavy show.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

avi, i might take you up on that. i'll email you later today once i figure out my plans.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

two shows tonight; maja ratkje at 964 natoma at 8pm, blevin blectum at rickshaw stop at 10:30pm.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm considering the Maja/Arve show tonight, but I'm thinking I'll probably end up passing. Two late nights in one week with my early morning schedule don't go well together.

Avi (Avi), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

can't recommend Maja highly enough, she's pretty remarkable.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

>>>>re:: S.F.

anyone seeing the maja ratkje show please give us a review. ditto for supersilent the following night.

william (william), Thursday, 4 November 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

avi, check email.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 4 November 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

got it

Avi (Avi), Thursday, 4 November 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the show was great - Supersilent was a lot more chaotic and noisy than I expected.

fwiw, I just passed a couple of the Jaga dudes wandering around Union Square looking lost.

Avi (Avi), Friday, 5 November 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

all the jaga guys (and gal) so looked like they all worked at Diesel.

the show was great. i'm assuming you haven't listened to too much Supersilent to have been surprised at the chaotic-ness. i was surprised that there was so much (any at all even) singing. it was pretty rad how Arve sang through his trumpet. sounded like a tortured Tom Waits growl. and it was topical. "i don't know if i can handle 4 more years!" "ohio!". the keyboards they used are so schmaltzy and new agey (i kept thinking of Tangerine Dream or Jean Michel Jarre), but then they'd throw on the distortion and the tone was just so beautiful.

biggest complaint of the night: the fucking shoeless tripper hippy dancing next to me during Supersilent

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and the leader (? - the guy in the front that played guitar, sax and oboe?) looked just like Pacey from Dawnson's Creek

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

...just back from catching supersilent here in van. amazing! almost punk rock in as much as the way they punished us sending several of the smallish [130-150] crowd away early.

arve's scat singing through his trumpet and without was a real surprise as well. they played only 3 tunes, but were on for about 95 mins. the first two were arranged pieces from what i could gather from arve's comments. the last was a full on improvised chaotic joy. truly amazing.

chicago and new york listmembers.....catch this tour!

william (william), Saturday, 6 November 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

as a tartu listmember who saw them live in april, i wholeheartedly second william's e-motion.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I caught Supersilent in SF (am actually on wifi at the Oakland airport right now) and I was very impressed - my only regret is that it seemed too short at an hour. I've never seen them before, and compared to the records, I noticed that Arve sang a lot more - which I liked, and I agree, the "OHIO! OHIO! WHY? MOTHERFUCKER!" section was fantastic. But the keyboardist actually impressed me less, during the quiet pieces he tended to noodle and sometimes take things in an obvious or banal direction. (Maybe I'm also prejudiced because I was disappointed by his work on that new Humcrush disc.) But Deathprod and the drummer impressed me exactly as much as I expected.

Jaga Jazzist seemed kind of caveman-like by comparison - I enjoyed their show but they need to broaden their repertoire.

savetherobot, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i've only ever heard one jaga jazzist song and actually left in the middle of their set. it was nice and pretty and sometimes moving, but overall, i just felt like it was a late 90s post rock show. coulda been any number of tortoise imitators. and the number of instruments was kind of lost in Great American. i don't think i heard a single note come out of the flute even though he played through every song

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I left halfway through the jaga jazzist set as well. Something about their sound really bothered me, but I can't explain what exactly it was.

Supersilent were excellent.

xian (xian), Sunday, 7 November 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Supersilent live is a total mindfuck allright. Saw them tonight, they played about an hour and 40 minutes + a crazy encore with Arve singing in made up japanese. They did shorter segments, maybe 7 total. Some of them were pretty intense and heavier but then others were a bit more lush and quite beautiful. Of course it sounded a lot like 8. My friend and his girlfriend, neither that into "improv" or having heard of them before, loved it too. Cannot recommend this enough!
