Please explain Mase to me

Cuz, like, dude quit music to become a priest, right? So, what, the lure of Bad Boy entertainment, bitches + hoes, bling bling was too much, so he said, "Eh, to hell with thsi Jesus nonsense - I'm going back to Puffy?" I don't get it. I mean, at least Run DMC actually rapped about God, they didn't act like no spiritual change / growth had occurred. To me, Puffy's insufferable brand of 'rap' personifies vanity (as well as suckiness). Has he addressed this in interviews, or is this just on some ol' hypocracy shit? What gives?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

do you not like fun!?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

at least Run DMC actually rapped about God, they didn't act like no spiritual change / growth had occurred

dude read new mase lyrics, ok?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)

He's a flip-flopper! He should go campaigning with Kerry!

Just kidding. I just think that people grow, you know? The priest thing worked for a while, and then he wanted to make another album. So what? It's not like he raps about hoes and money - he addresses the state of the rap world in a bunch of his lyrics (not as intelligently as Kanye or anything, but Mase is far more poppy).

I don't see any hypocrisy.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not about fun (which I DO despise, yes. Oh, horrible, horrible good times) - it's about consistency. Hey, buddy, if I don't commit all seven deadly sins by the time i go to bed, I stay up a little later, yaknowhutumsayin? This ain't about me - it's about Mase and his false-alarm retirement (hoax?).

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

A rapper said he retired and he hadn't really? My faith in humanity has been shaken.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the song I heard on the radio certainly wouldn't gel with any man of the cloth I'VE sucked off.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Cam'ron (I think it was him), flipped out at Ma$e over the phone on some radio show for being a traitor, saying rap sucks and then rapping again, all that. Ma$e just kinda smiled back and said he had no beef with anyone. I think "Welcome Back" is dippy and annoying but benign and endearing in a "Koko the Panda had twins in the zoo today" kinda way.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kinda shocked his comeback is as successful as it is.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you think the almighty feels about the way Ma$e spelleth his name?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's more annoyed with Jimmy $waggart and the like.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

he left rap to become a preacher, not a priest, there's a difference. and he did stay out of the game for nearly 5 years, which is way longer than Jay-Z or probably any other rapping trying to retire while still popular would last, and he's explained in many interviews why he stopped rapping and why he's comfortable doing it again. I haven't heard the new album, so I don't know how much religious content there is on it, but I know his lyrics are a little more wholesome in general now.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ma$e has but one God, and it's name is... Mammon!

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

pshaw, what is this 'consistency' you speak of?

jake b. (cerybut), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

God's busy right now with Paul Crouch of TBN trying to buy his way out of accusations of homosexual affairs... he'll get to the flaky hip-hoppers next...

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ma$e is large, he contains multitudes.

Homarus Vulgaris, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

> he's explained in many interviews why he stopped rapping

Has he ever explained why on earth he started?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

how dare he express himself and take the money people pay to hear him! my god, the hypocrisy of it all!

drew, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, he sampled gary numan! what else to do you need for me to explain to you wr2 ma$e?

(actually, twas puffy that sampled numan but you know what i mean)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

DO ALL YOU PEOPLE HATE FUN!?

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate mumbling.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't hate fun; I hate people suck so hard that they are veritable black holes of talent. People encouraging Ma$e are back-handedly supporting the surpression of gifted people of every creed and color.

In conclusion, JaXon I hate you for liking Ma$e.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

'welcome back' is so rub, it's like nobody is as delighted that he's back as he is, and those kids, although to be honest i reckon they were bribed with jolly ranchers by diddy

teh pow! (blueski), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, you just lost my vote you fuckhead

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I WILL NOT BACK DOWN

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved when I was watching the VMAs with my mom and he was all yelling "WELCOME BACK" and my mom was like "who is he welcoming back?" and I said "himself" and she said "well, that's just plain retarded", then she paused all serious-like for a moment and was like "wait, he's not REALLY retarded, is he?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye's favorite rapper is Ma$e, remember.

hey, I endorse just as many talentless batshit WHITE rappers, and louder too, thank you very much.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait you said EVERY creed and color. never mind.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye's favorite rapper is Ma$e, remember.

Kanye West, dictator of taste worldwide.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing Kanye did was "Jesus Walks" and really just the beat and a couple of the lines.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

figures, kanye's just a mumble mouth too

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually think I like "Two Words" more than "Jesus Walks". Oh wait, that's the one with Freeway and Mos Def on it, huh? I wonder...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate how the stations that play "Jesus Walks" around here ALWAYS play the version without the last (best) verse.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh plizease the entire Kanye album is great.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate how the stations that play "Jesus Walks" around here ALWAYS play the version without the last (best) verse.

Really? I haven't heard it on the radio ever, but there's something notable about the fact that they drop the verse with the "you won't get played" and "take away from my spins" and whatnot on it.

Anyone who can't spell the word "hypocrisy" isn't allowed to accuse anyone of it.

This would be a bigger BURN if Roger weren't already banned.
