insert typical "can you tell i'm bored?" comment here.

Regardless, this isn't anyone's favourite Sugar album, but what does everyone think of this thing?

It's got "Gee Angel," which definitely makes it worth owning (which you can do for about $1 at any used cd store in the country).

it's alright.

I remember MM and NME both giving it rave reviews, at least one of them said it was better than Copper Blue. It's not. It does have some fine tunes on it though - 'Gift', 'Gee Angel' and the MBV-tastic 'Your Favorite Thing' for a start. And although on re-listening it sounds a bit self-concious I enjoy 'Can't Help You Anymore', one of Mould's poppiest moments ever. The David Barbe track was a grower too. It's a good tight album with no filler, although I could live without the token Grant-bashing track. It's all just a bit, well, unexceptional.

The riff of "Gee Angel" still makes me very happy.

it bored me to tears, i sold it quite soon after..

Is "FUEL" by Sugar worth $1?

wombatX (wombatX), Friday, 24 September 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

At least Alex and I are consistent. I'm always scared someone will link back to a thread where I contradict myself.

I believe "Copper Blue" and "Beaster" were both written before Sugar was formed, Mould wanted "FU:EL" to sound more like a band album, hence the less personal nature of the lyrics. It's not an album I can connect with, unlike much of his work.

Gift, Your Favorite Thing (which Kevin & Belinda should be getting royalties for - check out "Blown A Wish" if you don't believe me"), Gee Angel, Believe What You're Saying and Explode And Make Up are all classic. Can't speak about the rest, as those are the tracks I decided to keep.

Overall I'd say that Besides is a richer, more worthwhile purchase. And Copper Blue is just great.

"Where Diamonds Are Halos" >>>>> "Company Book"

Spurred on by this thread, I dug out my copy. I'm convinced "Gee Angel" is driven by the best riff Mould has written since mid-period Husker Du.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 September 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i will take on all comers, armed only with the ferocity of the live "explode and make up" from besides

asl, Friday, 24 September 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

explode and make up is beautiful, but really most of bob mould post husker du has been a case of making allowances- some of copper blue was good, beaster was cool, fuel was definitely patchy, and in my defense i am horribly drunk

MANTHONY OTM.
SO WEIRD.

six months pass...
Reviving, cuz I just finished listening to it after many years and think the one-two punch of "Believe What You're Saying" and "Explode & Make Up" is just shattering (I'm also drunk).

I hope it's not heretical to prefer Sugar to Husker Du. "Copper Blue" persuaded me to invest in the Husker catalogue and while I love'em CB is where Mould puts his hard-earned craft and chops into songs that give "mature songwriting" a good name.

(love the production on all Sugar albums too: dense but crystalline.)

Haha, I got this for $1 a few weeks ago, but I haven't listened to it yet. Once I do, I'll have to revive that other thread.

Interesting. This hit the nail on the head. I loved Mould too much to say I hated FU:EL, but really I did, and I haven't listened to anything he's done since this. Now I wonder whether he actually changed the nature of his songwriting around this point, hence everything subsequent has been so bad.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Saturday, 29 April 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

"Believe What You're Saying" and "Explode & Make Up" have made many a relationship tape.
