Top five LPs of 2001...

As it seems pretty clear that few people here hold much truck with either Q or NME's 2001 lists, what exactly would everyone choose as their favourite five LPs of the last 12 months?

Nick Southall, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tool's Lateralus. I'm still not sure about the rest.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we turn this one into the official ILM poll?

Melissa W, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure I like the idea of being 'official'... But what the hell, if enough people reply, it may as well be.

Nick Southall, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Including compilations or not?

Tim, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So far:

  • Hochenkeit "Omu4h 4aholab/400 Boys"
  • Super Furry Animals "Rings Around The World"
  • Climax Golden Twins "s/t / red polka dot"
  • Pinback "Blue Screen Life"
  • Hawd Gankstuh Rappuhs MCs Wid Ghatz "2 Hype 2 Wype"

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For the amount of time they've spent in the player:

Strokes "Is this it" Seafood "When do we start fighting?" Tompaulin "The town and the city" Art of fighting "Wires" Life without buildings "Any other city"

The dukes of hang gliding album gets an honourable mention..

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i wonder if people always choose the albums they play most when compiling these lists. i do but perhaps others have a different personal standard to judge quality by.

keith, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) Ted Leo/Pharmacists, "the tyranny of distance" 2) Mercury Rev, "all is dream" 3) The Dirtbombs, "ultraglide in black" 4) the New Pornographers, "mass romantic" 5) Kings of Convenience, "quiet is the new loud"

Simone, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Daft Punk, Discovery 2. Jay-Z, The Blueprint 3. Fennesz, Endless Summer 4. Various Artists, Ayia Napa 2001 5. Aaliyah, Aaliyah

Ian, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops, I forgot the Avalanches which I haven't played lately but I played a zillion times the first half of 2001...

1. Daft Punk, Discovery
2. The Avalanches, Since I Left You
3. Fennesz, Endless Summer
4. Jay-Z, The Blueprint
5. Various Artists, Ayia Napa 2001

Ian, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Listened to most:

1. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
2. Philistines Jr - Analog vs. Digital
3. Sixth Great Lake - Up the Country
4. Sum 41 - All Killer No Filler
5. Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear.

james, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) Daft Punk - Discovery
2) Jay-Z - The Blueprint
3) Aaliyah - Aaliyah
3) V/A - Total 3 (Kompakt)
5) V/A: Masterstepz - Ayia Napa 2001

Hon. Mentions... Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein; Bjork - Vespertine; Skitz - Countryman; Basement Jaxx - Rooty; The Beta Band - The Hot Shots II; Pulp - We Love Life; V/A: Andy Weatherall - Hypercity; Adam F Presents KAOS - The Anti-Acoustic Warfare; Missy Elliot - Miss E... So Addictive

I'm surprised by the similarities of mine and Ian's lists - The Avalanches was my favourite album of last year, and because of that and the fact that I've deliberately avoided it this last six months I'm not going to list it again. What an amazing year though - I counted around thirty-five albums that I've really enjoyed from this year, and at least another fifteen I'd want to get before I could make a list with any certainty (so if anyone wants to buy me Fennesz, Dub Taylor, Foxy Brown, De La Soul, Plaid, Kelis, Beanie Sigel, the Playhouse comp etc. feel free!)

Tim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5. Pink - Missundaztood.

4. Fabolous - Ghetto Fabolous.

3. Jewel - This Way.

2. Blu Cantrell - So Blu. My weird artsyfart brother always drives me to school, and when the "Neiman Marcus on a shopping spreeyah" verse on "Hit Em Up Style" comes on the radio, he always says, "I think Ms. Cantrell's vocal delivery in the first verse is a very clever nod to Mark E. Smith. Superb." Um, whatever!!!!

1. Matmos - A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure. I usually don't listen to this weird techno stuff, but the band that made this album got all their sounds from my best friend Bridget Brianne's nose job!

Brittany Brooke Breitenmoser, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a) Brittany something about your list is at once supurb and insane.

b) I too heard echoes of Mark E Smith in "Hit 'Em Up Style", also in the verse that goes braggin/draggin/baggin.

Tim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Interesting point made earlier about standards of judgement, e.g. I liked Terre Thamelitz's 'Interstices' album a lot, but I knew i'd be listening more to the N*E*R*D album, which is not great but its got some very good songs.

Strange too that someone mentioned 'After the Gold Rush' as this has been on my stereo (along with Harvest) for much of the year, along with usual suspects (fennesz, cannibal ox, Roots Manuva, Blueprint, Discovery etc.)

Singles of the year (while we're at it): would have to include Lapance, Get Ur Freak On, Girls, Girls, Girls (the remix, which reminds me of the Flaming Lips), Aerodynamic, Digital Love (which made me enjoy a G*P advert!), Burn, 21 Seconds (terrible rapping I know), Nite and Fog, Special Delivery, God is in the House, Hard To Explain, Fell in Love With a Girl, Pinky Ring...

But my absolute favourite recorded moment of the year is at the end of the video to Missy's One Minute Man (after the magnificent Trina moment) when the song and video segue thrillingly into Whatcha Gon' Do.

laavanyan, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm defering judgement until I've heard the new Wu-Tang Clan album... Plus Tom Ewing was going to announce an official poll, so I'm waiting for that trumpet to call.

JoB, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely greatest song-segue in a hip hop video is the interpolation of Daphne & Celeste's "U.G.L.Y." in the middle of Nelly's "Batter Up" video?!?

Tim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

listened to the most:

1- Felix Da Housecat - ^kittinz + thee glitz^ 2- The Dayglo Fishermen - ^comet nerdlinger^ 3- David Bowie -^all saints^ 4- Daft Punk - ^discovery^ [ beginning to grow on me at last Simon !] 5- Ol Skool Euphoria

liked the most - debut from *God Forbid*

, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My two cents:

1. Spring Heel Jack and Blue Series Continuum/ Masses/ Thirsty Ear 2. Aesop Rock/ Labor Days/ Def Jux 3. Robert Barry and Fred Anderson/ Duets 2001/ Thrill Jockey 4. Dismemberment Plan/ Change/ DeSoto 5. Sonic Liberation Front/ Water and Stone/ Eye Dog

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff W, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boredoms, Rebore Vol. 0
Fennesz, Endless Summer
Koenjihyakkei, Nivraym

And this can still change!

dleone, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's not going to be an official ILM poll, I think.

Tom, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Daniel Beddingford (or whatever) was at the Pinback gig last night. Brian, I managed to get one of the larst Pinback cds from Rob (yes a good idea is to bring only 10 very coveted cds to a rare London show oh yarrrrs) but I've got a feeling it could become a big fave - if too late to make a Top 5ive LP of this year.

The thing with the Daft Punk album is that I only *really* love the first four songs, the rest is great but more oftem or not skipped. If I do listen to the whole thing, I've tended to zone out by then. If they can be LPs not released this year I'd say off the top of my head that Pinback and Daft Punk would certainly be up there. Another one is the Steve Malkmus album WHICH I HAVE BIG REASONS FOR! And perhaps The Lonely World of the Dudley Coporation could get an honourable mention. And Songs from Vib-Ribbon. I'll do a bettah list tonight.

Sarah, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1)'aaliyah' aaliyah ;2)'since i left you' the avalanches ;3)'the blueprint' jay-z ;4)'discovery' daft punk ;5)'amnesiac' radiohead.

michael wells, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's *Bedingfield*.

albums:

1. The Avalanches - Since I Left You

2. Daft Punk - Discovery

3. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 4. Missy Elliott - Miss E ... So Addictive

5. Luke Haines - Christie Malry's Own Double Entry (OST)

(a Top 10 would be fairer: I did that somewhere else on here)

Robin Carmody, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

changes daily:
Cannibal Ox, The Cold Vein
The White Stripes, White Blood Cells
Autechre, Confield
The Dismemberment Plan, Change
Mum, Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Was OK
I've heard more good stuff this year than in a long time, due in a large part to ILM. So thanks.

dan, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's not going to be an official ILM poll, I think.

:'(

Melissa W, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What, you're going to listen to him? You can always run it yourself. I bet if someone runs one, people will respond. ;)

Josh, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The albums poll would be way too predictable. From looking at the lists above, you can tell right off the bat what the top four or five entries would be.

A singles poll would be somewhat more interesting and much more in the spirit of ILM -- but the focus group approximates the same thing, doesn't it?

Ian, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, except for the fact that lots of people will presumably list things that had no chance of being on the focus group list.

I see no reason why predictability should be any barrier to doing an albums list, if someone wants to. It's the bottom that's interesting usually anyway.

Josh, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

* Felix Da Housecat - Kittenz And Thee Glitz * Miss Kitten And The Hacker - The First Album * Ladytron - 604 * Kylie Minogue - Fever * Luke Haines - Oliver Twist Manifesto

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In no particular order:

Juno, 'A Future Lived In Past Tense' OR Dismemberment Plan, 'Change' - can't decide. The White Stripes, 'White Blood Cells' Radiohead, 'Amnesiac' / 'I Might Be Wrong' Super Furry Animals, 'Rings Around the World' Sparklehorse, 'It's A Wonderful Life'

Simon H., Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Dismemberment Plan "Change" Missy Elliott "So Addictive" Firewater "Psychopharmacology" Sparklehorse "It's A Wonderful Life" Ken Stringfellow "Touched"

al, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jay Z! Other than that I don't know, I hate albums. Let's talk about singles.

Ally, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

stina nordenstam - this is stina nordenstam , Aaliyah - Aaliyah, radiohead - amnesiac , plaid - double figure ,The Lilac Time - the fontana trilogy , Luomo - vocal city (which might very well have been released last year . i can't remember )

still more predictable answers: 1. Daft Punk
2. Jay-z

scott p., Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Plan! Scott, you forgot The Plan!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i got a lot of stuff this year, and not necessarily all new stuff, so it's hard for me to remember what was actually released this year, though I do think it was a very good year overall. Off the top of my head, these are the five best: My Morning Jacket - At Dawn, Figurine - The Heartfelt, Daft Punk - Discovery, Le Coupe - Le Coupe, Sodastream - The Hill For Company. There were a lot of other good records though, maybe we should do a top 50...

g, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm still not doing a list yet. This is just to re-record my support for a proper ILM poll. Yes, it might be obvious already what the Top5 will be, maybe even the Top10, but #11 onwards could be v. interesting.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um ... shit, I hate lists.

Ted Leo - The Tyranny of Distance // Jenny Toomey - Antidote // Jay- Z - The Blueprint // Nina Nastasia - Dogs (released in 2000, yeah yeah) // Dismemberment Plan - Change

I always feel my lists are more an attempt to gain some vague sense of credibility or establish some position, when I really don't feel passionate enough to truly sit down and rank everything. But, whatever.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Plan! Scott, you forgot The Plan!

Ah yes, I did. I'm so predictable -- and so absent-minded!

scott p., Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Got fed up waiting for Cookie to do this so here I go:

"Hometown Traffic" The Pinefox

"True Love Waits" The Pinefox

"The Hard Shoulder" The Pinefox

"I Think You Dropped A Moonbeam" The Pinefox

Hmmmmmmmmmm, No. 5? will The Pines album be released befor Christmas?

helenfordsdale, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

#5 = Lloyd Cole, "ETC". Patchier than I'd first sensed (too many very brief instrumentals, two cover versions, one or two 'unfinished'- sounding songs - so the number of full-fledged Great Lloyd Songs is unwontedly reduced), but still light years ahead of almost everyone else.
