Born Heller - s/t

The Born Heller album has enjoyed heavy rotation in my household lately; my roomie Bryce (whose tastes usually run between teh Smiffs & Joy Division & teh Bob Dylan Man) copied it from me and plays it all the time. I'm glad of this; I really like the sparseness of it all, and it suits the early autumn/late summer weather pretty well--especially the chillier days and windier nights. With the exception of maybe "Pansies" there isn't a notably weak track. Keeping the album short probably contributed to that; if it were ten or fifteen minutes longer it would have more potential to get tiresome.

My favorites are the extremely pop "The Left Garden" (which is the most conventionally pretty song on the album, despite lyrics about dead birds and running away from humans), "No More Lamps In The Morning" and "First Kiss." I'll admit, though, that "First Kiss" isn't too gripping until the chanted/repeated ending.

For those of you into the folksier/more rustic side of things, this comes highly recommended. I had, actually, never heard of them until they played Pasture Fest in July. ILMers Brock, Roger Adultery & Emma Cleveland were there. I was blown away, so I got the CD. I'm glad that it wasn't just the mushrooms, that it was actually a worthwhile purchase.

Born Heller live are a treat. I've heard great things about Josephine Foster and the Supposed's new one, also on Locust. Her self-recorded cdr "little life" is also amazing. I like the poppier stuff more than the sparse stuff.

Sean, any idea if Josephine's cd-r is still available? And if so where? I'd be very interested in that.

I only heard my friend's copy, but I am sure I could get one from him
and send you one, if you are that interested. It'll take some time, but I think it would be worth it. I am expecting some other things from him, too, so it wouldn't be any trouble to ask him to slip one of those in.
I think I remember seeing it (Little Life) in an Eclipse update, but I just checked their catalogue and it doesn't seem to be in stock.
Have you heard her with the Supposed? When Born Heller were in town, she was talking crazy about rock operas and Jefferson Starship's "Blows Against the Empire," which gives me some strange ideas.
There is an interview with Jason Ajemian, the bass player in Born Heller, at http://www.foxydigitalis.com that is pretty cool. One of the guys that I used to play in a band with grew up with him in North Carolina. That same friend whose got Josephine's cdr, naturally.

Of course I am talking about a trade. If you are interested.

i really like this album. it seems to have been lost in 2004's bearded shuffle. josephine's track on _golden apples_ is maybe perfect, and re: the rock opera album w/the supposed.....the songs are good, but there are a few quirky things that keep me from repeat play (e.g. lead guitarist is a little masturbatory with the twang; some songs sound a little too pastiche-y to no avail).
