gaz (gaz), Thursday, 23 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

93. Motorbass -- Fabulous

(dl, "Mother" is Goldie's one hour prog-dnb "piece", which arguably contains no good bits at all but does a damned good job of making you wait around for them)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 September 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

85. bluetile lounge "ambered"

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Friday, 24 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

84. "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" by Elton John

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The intro is my favorite part of that Elton John track. It's the one reason I old onto my copy of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Though I am a sucker for near-prog keyboarditude (though not enough to really like "Foreplay").

Abbitt, Friday, 24 September 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's easily my fave Elton track, but the piano-driven transition between the elegiac "Funeral..." and "Love Lies Bleeding" (espeically when the guitar come in with that power chord) still gets me in a big cheezy way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the cool bit in mother is watching the cd glint in the streetlight after tossing it out the window...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Queen Electric Barbarella (Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZ), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

74. NIN - "Closer"

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Namely when the distorto Depeche synth riff kicks in?

73. Skinny Puppy, "Worlock" -- it's good enough during the verses and I can take or leave the Manson bits but oh my god the chorus when the distorted synth string/whatever kicks in and suddenly it becomes the most mournful moment ever, a slow slide into the pit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup. Not to say that the rest of the song is a slog, but that part pwnz the rest of the song.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

72. Primal Scream - Burning Wheel

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Gang of Four - "Anthrax"

Not that the intro is THAT long, but it's not very interesting either.

hurting, Friday, 24 September 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

70. "yes! i am a long way from home" by mogwai, when allll the instruments come in

69. not that it's so agonizing a wait, but when the kitchens of distinction dude finally belts out the chorus on "gone world gone"...fuuuck

joseph (joseph), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

67. "Violet Eyes" by the Meat Puppets - Sort've a bog standard song until two little very metal riff moments towards the end. Rocktastic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

66.) "Layla" by Derek & The Dominoes
65.) "Half A Canyon" by Pavement

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

64. David Bowie, "Station to Station": the moment of tension just as he kicks into "once there were mountains on mountains ..."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

63. David Bowie, "Heroes", obv. the bit where he yells "I, I will be king". Gives me the chills almost every time.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

62. "Walk On By" by the Stranglers -- specificaly when Dave stops noodlilng all over the keyboards and Hugh Cornwell's tastefully restrained guitars take over the proceedings.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

61. Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp

Heck, the song's just starting to get good and it's over.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 24 September 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

60. Frank Black - Speedy Marie
who's with me?

jeremiah (jeremiah), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

59. Another Girl, Another Planet.. The Only Ones ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

there are good bits in 'Mother' - maybe not good enough tho

58. Orbital 'You Lot'

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

57. Candy Candy - Medicine - I love playing this song for people who don't know it, cause it starts like this sort of cheesey Madonna track, and then about halfway through, the phase and the delay starts kicking in, and it's like the song just starts... MELTING!!! It catches me every time, and I've heard it a hundred times. I put it on, and I think "why do I love this song? it's pure cheese"

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

56."Stairway To Heaven" is nothing BUT cool bits: An ascending staircase of ever-escalating irresistability, from the entry of the vocal to the masterful guitar solo. But my single favourite is halfway through, when Bonzo FINALLY hits some drums.

55."Hip Priest" - I'm always on the edge of my seat, waiting for MES to get his arse in gear and commence with the "It's a hip! Hip! Hip! Hip!" chant.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

surely Televisions Marquee Moon owns this thread .. the build up is stunning, and the eventual release is indeed rather special ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

53. The Carpenters "Goodbye To Love" - second guitar solo.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

54. Pavement - Father To A Sister Of Thought - the country solo bit! otherwise it's an okay ballad thing.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

53. Blur - "Slow Down"
52. House of Love - "Se Dest"

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

!!! - me and guiliani down by the schoolyard

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of see the Tears For Fears one upon relistening to the song, but it still feels too singular. "Heads Over Heels" certainly fits though. Also:

4. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - "Patio Song" (coda!)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

3. "Jocko Homo" by Devo - I mean, there isn't a wasted second in this song -- every moment is SHEER DEVOLVED GENIUS, but the breakdown towards the end when everything is stripped down to a pulsing bass, a barely audible "jock-jock-jock-jock.." and then a noise I've never been able to quite identify (the sound of mutating chimps?) forming an otherwordly, wordless chorus before Mark starts up with the "Are We Not Men?"s again.......brilliance.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't really deserve to be #2, but:
2. "On Warmer Music" by Chisel, which has like ten palm-muted guitar and vocals verses before the drums and bass kick into the glorious repetitive chorus, which repeats and repeats until the end.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Since Nick never officially entered it, I'll swoop in for #1 with Gn'R - Paradise City!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

1. "Heart of Darkness" Pere Ubu

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't really deserve to be #2, but:
2. "On Warmer Music" by Chisel, which has like ten palm-muted guitar and vocals verses before the drums and bass kick into the glorious repetitive chorus, which repeats and repeats until the end.

Due to the overtly resounding OTM'ness of this post, i have new love for n/a.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"GET READY FOR THE INVASION, SELF-SATISFIED SMUG ROCK NATION....."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to listen to that album again, it's been a long time.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say, Alex, I never would've taken you for a Chisel fan. They seem too...pop for you.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

46. Underworld - Cups

The really cool bit of "Cups" is the first 7 minutes, not the last 3.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 24 September 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say, Alex, I never would've taken you for a Chisel fan. They seem too...pop for you.

I wouldn't say I catagorically love everything they did, but "On Warmer Music" is just simply a perfect, perfect song.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

0. James Brown - "Ain't It Funky Now" [teh horns innit]

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

In Men at Work's "Who Can it Be Now", the second time he says the line "Who could it be knocking at my door", someone chimes in to harmonize the end of the phrase("my door"). Great song otherwise, but I live for that moment.

tremendoid, Friday, 1 October 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

While it's a short song, the brilliantly chiming guitar-work/chorus of "Smiling" by the Kitchens of Distinction only rears its gossamer head twice (and it feels like a huge wait before it arrives each time), but is dazzling on a scale of a million shimmering Christmasses every time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

um - xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxpost:
gang of four - anthrax

oh my god. you are WRONG! that guitar intro rules.

on 'Let's Dance' the second time he sings "tremble like a flowwwahhh" and his voice cracks, awesome moment.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 29 January 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

LA Synthesis 'Agraphobia'. the original (not so much the Kenny Larkin rmx) builds and builds and builds, and when that Reich-like synth riff hits... oh man, it just sends me.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Saturday, 29 January 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

on 'Let's Dance' the second time he sings "tremble like a flowwwahhh" and his voice cracks, awesome moment.

um maybe pere ubu FINAL SOLUTIOn w/ the guitar solo

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 29 January 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

I third the "Let's Dance" suggestion - always thought I was the only one who'd noticed that.

Alex in NYC OTM, as ever, about mentioning the Kitchens and their swirly shimmering build-ups. My choice is the final chorus in "When In Heaven", after the Marilyn Monroe lines.

My ultimate choice though is NO's "Bizarre Love Triangle", the 12 inch as on Substance, and the 'moment worth waiting for' is when Barney's final chorus comes in after the vocoder and the tinkly snowdrop keyboards choruses. Never was he more angelic in voice.

darren (darren), Saturday, 29 January 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

i still thrill to jerry hall's cameo in bryan ferry "let' stick together "- the ho-o-o-o-owl

I just discovered this again after my husband noticed the similarity with some of Justus Kohncke's tracks on Doppelleben.

youn, Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I suppose "Turn Blue" by Iggy Pop could be considered a song composed of a series of bursts, but the best part for me starts where the "Accept me, don't reject me, don't forget me!" part segues with the Bowie "Oh, oh, oh, oh" background vocals, bringing the song to a close with the repeated cries of "I shot myself up!"

Voodoo Man (Voodoo Man), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
"Urgent" by Foreigner. There's really only one reason why this song rocks, and it ain't the verses.

Kanye West - "Slow Jamz" (twista!)

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

Stereolab's "Anamorphose" - becomes irresistible when the french horns come in. I'll go so far as to say any initial french horn burst is classic, at least for that moment.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

I saw this just as the cool bit in The Wrens' "Happy" started, so I was compelled to post.
