i know its not really the 'ghetto kids' he wants (according to one interview) so who is it? hes sold 50,000 records so someone is buying it. it would be cool if he got played on american 'urban radio' but i dont see it happening.

He's on Matador so there you go.

I said this before somewhere else ... Dizzee got his 15 minutes (literally) on the biggest hip-hop station in Los Angeles, Power 106. Did an interview, they played "Fix Up", he freestyled over some hip-hop beats.

You know how he thanked Feli Fel in the liner notes for Showtime? That was the Power 106 dj that had him on the air.

I'm really curious how that happened, by the way. And I've been listening to my ipod instead of the radio, so I dunno if Power 106 still has Dizzee in rotation.

(this is in response to "it would be cool ... but i don't see that happening".)

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he sells exclusively to music writers.

50,000 units sounds a bit right

i went to a birthday party last year and it was all normal boring older people and someone gave his first album as a gift to the guy whose birthday it was. They were all working lefty white folks. they had a huge npr thing on him, so i'm guessing every npr and pbs totebag that you see has a dizzee rascal cd in it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope the republicans shut npr down. they brainwashed my mom!! i hear all these "anecdotes" that are like telling someone abt an "article" u read in the nytimes mag or way worse, newsweek, or time. they have some great bumpers tho!! the other week i heard abt 5 secnds of wyclef's slow creepy guitar from the bonus track on the score, abt "maathaafaackaa! / YOU AIN'T DRUG FREEE EE EEE / you're a fiend / and you damn well / can't get no motherfucking money / from mee-hee-hee"

This question was just as annoying when it was asked after the first album came out. Wonder why noone ever wonders who Franz Ferdinand appeals to in the USA.

bugged out, Friday, 24 September 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't speak for my fellow countrymen or for old ravers or for pitchfork readers, just for random pop fans like myself who like big dumb hooks and big dumb beats. if you heard "fix up look sharp" even once, you pretty much needed that album.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wonder why noone ever wonders who Franz Ferdinand appeals to in the USA"

Because a lot of people are actually buying their albums so it's not hard to tell.

50,000 copies isn't that much in the US, especially for someone so revered by music writers (Rascall I mean). I definitely don't think he appeals to anyone who is seriously into hip-hop.

Hurting, Friday, 24 September 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely don't think he appeals to anyone who is seriously into hip-hop.

eh. he hasn't gotten a lot of exposure in serious hip-hop channels, so who knows.

Geeks.

Plus, the few of us who remember how much it was to live through the old school -- every record back then seemed like an invention.

Chris O., Friday, 24 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

its not the same as asking who franz ferdinand appeals to - we pretty much know who that is. dizzee is a more curious mini phenom because british MCs dont traditionally sell that well in the states, whether from grime or hip hop.

I definitely don't think he appeals to anyone who is seriously into hip-hop.

I’ll testify to this. I have a buddy who is "seriously into hip hop" – by which I mean, his self-professed favorites are Eminem, Nas, Jay, Kanye, Lupe, Chamillionaire. The other week I lent him Boy in da Corner and Maths + English, and he gave them back to me and said, after listening to both, "This is the worst shit I’ve ever heard. It’s not even real hip hop!!"

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

amongst NY hip hop heads that I know, the only British MC that gains respect is Roots Manuva
