A World Purely Musical

in the alex ross "rock 101" article he says:

...it is interesting to see how the ear trumps the eye when the computer takes over. Music is being consumed with no images attached—no videos, no TV appearances, not even album jackets. In the nineteenth century, the Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick dreamed of a world “purely musical,” beyond politics and personality. Such a world now exists in the form of the MP3.

so, are there any songs that you consume "purely musically"?
if you download some random song and enjoy it, do you always search for more info on the artist?
what's your favourite song by someone you know nothing about?

i have a song on my harddrive called "thirty six hours" by someone named john cooper clarke. i think i got it from one of the mp3blogs, though possibly sl5k.
it's a cool enough song. meat'n'potatoes bar-rock music, but i dig the lyrics and vocals. but not enough to find out what else he's done, what he looks like (my mental image is a cross between mark e smith, and ray winstone), what his album covers look like, etc...

maybe i'm just being lazy. i usually enjoy knowing some backstory on artists; often enjoy their music more as a result, but it's also kind of cool listening to music with no imposed context.

so, thoughts?

Alex Ross is a smart fuck but he tends to exaggerate when he gets excited.

I often grab an MP3 from a blog ("for evaluation purposes"), forget about it, rediscover it, and wonder where on earth it came from - but more often than not, I won't then go off and research the artist. Meaning that, yes, there are many pieces of music floating around on my hard drive that exist purely as music, devoid of any other context.

Prime example: "8eme Ciel" by Katerine. In fact, I don't WANT to know any more about this track. I like its mystery.

i tend not to stand around the dj constantly asking "wots this mate" or peering at the label when i'm out.

Bob Dylan? 1966? He looks EXACTLY like that.

i have that "8eme ciel" as well. perfect example. good song, but better left mysterious.
i love those mp3blogs. turning me on to much cool stuff i may never have heard otherwise. all your work is much appreciated folks.

that jcc sounds fatter than 66 dylan.
and i think we all just really need cycle sluts.
or, is that the name of a band?

I was just thinking about this, because my new favourite thing is as follows:

a) hit the MP3 blogs
b) download anything that seems intriguing, based on description alone
c) burn the results to a CD without previewing anything
d) throw that CD in my portable player, which is with me pretty much all the time
e) listen with the disc set on "Random" without looking at the display to see what's what

Yesterday, there was a song on one of these hodge-podge discs that I kept repeating. I just googled the lyrics while typing this post. Turns out it's "Evil" by Interpol, who I had previously dismissed, but am now curious about. This is why MP3 blogs are so much fun.

I sometimes search for random nouns on slsk and download whatever sounds interesting. Also, mp3 labels in languages I don't speak are good.

yeah, random searches are great.
also, downloading random tunes from whoever's finally got that song that's been in your wishlist forever.
