Is that actually Lenny Kravitz in that Gap commercial or just a clever imitator?

The "I'm crazy for that little lady" one. I didn't think he could sink much further.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but is there anything genuinely "clever" about imitating Lenny Kravitz?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

A better question is what liquid he is bathing in on that cover. One reviewer quipped that it was his own menstrual fluid.

Hurting, Friday, 24 September 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Eww.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So it is him and his latest single. Seriously, this song is pretty lame even by his standards isn't it?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 24 September 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure if anyone could reach a new level of lameness, it'd be Lenny Kravitz.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 24 September 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but isn't lenny himself a clever imitator?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 24 September 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm crazy for this little lady
I'm freaking for my little baby
'Cause she makes me feel good
She's so fine

Sir Kravitz has never exactly been an amazing lyricist or anything, but goddamn.

Kenny, you're clearly not letting love rule.

Yep, it's pretty goddamn awful, alright, is my estimation. And compared to most ILMers, I practically WORSHIP the guy! Past tense, tho: Hasn't released a decent track since "Are You Gonna Go My Way".
And I understand he's even gone modern, abandoning the 1973-ish production techniques which were his whole raison d'etre and the only reason I listened. So fuck him.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He's better than the 'little lady'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I just wasted 10 seconds trying to decide if this new song was better or worse than his cover of American Woman.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to recall my brother telling me years and years ago, maybe it was even the 80's or it could have been early 90's, that he went and saw Lenny live and he said that he was amazing! Like, really great. Is this possible? I will have to ask him the next time i talk to him.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Who knows? Maybe that was when he was just starting his career and had a little humility, and no desire to display that infuriatingly smug face on every media outlet.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I see that ad I just think "Two media whores who really don't need the money".

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

worst ad ever! i like SJP though.

thing is, SJP and LK are basically the same height

if everybody says that sarah jessica parker is hot, does that make her hot? because she's not. not even in miami rhapsody.

drew, Friday, 24 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all david letterman's fault.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

This song sounds exactly like that Local H alt-rock hit from some years back where the singer says "and you just don't get it / keep it copacetic / and you learn to accept it / you know, it's so pathetic"... doesn't it?
Same rhythm / cadence to the lyrics / etc.

But, yes, far more troubling is the fact that it sucks a huge bag of dicks.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

has there ever been a more dashed-off sounding ad tune than this?? it's like he wrote it on a napkin at the shoot, recorded it in two minutes and then walked off with more money than most of us will ever see in our lives!! i'd think this was a terrific fuck-you move, if not for the utter desperation of his andre3000 haircut.

jones (actual), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I read in interview with him and his drummer a couple months ago in Modern Drummer. On one hand, I give him props for being a decent drummer and respecting that shit, but good lord is there a lot of ammo for ILX, just tons of self-congratulatory bullshit (I think the word "genius" was mentioned a lot).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Kinda like his career. (Although, granted, he might have spent a little more time back then listening to which Beatles riffs to ape, and maybe checking out Trent Reznor's fashion aesthetic and seeing how to throw afros on top of it.)

Old SJP will look like Witch Hazel.

I remember actually thinking that "Mr Cab Driver" was interesting when it came out (I think it was in Grade 6, mind you). And, yes, the old-school production quality did have a certain charm. "Are You Gonna Go My Way" was such a blatant Hendrix rip, and so blatantly inferior to the original, and so inescapable, that I'd totally lost any feeling I may have had for him by then. But I still thought he was just sort of mediocre until "American Woman". But, yeah, this new song totally sounds like a dashed-off jingle. That's why I wondered if it was just some jingle writer trying to cop Kravitz's style.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, I hate Lenny Kravitz persona and I also agree that his lyrics are awful, but there's something I kind of like in some of his songs (the one discussed here is one of them). I don't know, they're catchy. Plus he's done some good stuff like that songs he did for Vanessa Paradis.

daavid (daavid), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

seeing he flopping around like a muppet in this commercial makes me want to break all televisions

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't really hate LK but he's just so boring, really, that I can't understand what people see (hear) in him. I remember all these Parisians loving him and thinking to myself, "Well, at least they don't have to listen to the lyrics."

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just seen the ad for the first time and I can't quite believe it is Kravitz. Not that he's ever done anything of worth ever but the track is just too shoddy even for him. Plus the miming is like the worst ever.

He's gotten less cute lately too. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the tabloids loved his assertion that he "doesn't wear underwear". I've seen that in print like three or four places.

ooh! naughty!

squirrelbait (squirrelbait), Saturday, 25 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That Lenny Kravitz Gap ad makes me pray for NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST IN FIVE MINUTES

Hill Bicks, Monday, 27 September 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The world would be a better place without Lenny Kravitz.

I don't understand why SJP is advertising Gap. Having watched 'Sex And The City' before (which I'm sure is her most well known role), it's all about how she spends all her money on really pricey clothes. Isn't Gap like, not really that classy.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, that's a tv character?
