Who Has The Dreamiest Voice Of All Time?

A voice that sends you over the moon. A voice that makes you go "ahhhhhhhh". A voice that really hits the spot. A swoon-worthy voice. A voice that can tuck you in at night and give you nice dreams. You get the picture. Okay, it doesn't have to be "Of All Time", just a personal fave will do. I have lots of faves. From bossa nova babes to goth metal kings. But someone who hits my pleasure center every time is Keely Smith. Yeah, Keely Smith, of Louis Prima & Keely Smith fame! I only listen to her old solo records though. Louis I don't need that much of. Anyway, she is one. I bask in her warm glow. And you?

Scott, I like Keely Smith and Anita O'Day a lot, too! What do you think about Rosemary Clooney?

chuck, Friday, 24 September 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never really listened to Rosemary that much. I've never owned any of her records either. Most of the stuff I've heard by her has been on oldies stations and in old movies/tv specials. She was a powerhouse.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll agree with Mato's choice of Dean Wareham - if only because I want to add Ed Kuepper. So it's more about singers who ended up developing dreamy/narcoleptic voices.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Taking "dreamy" quite literally, I'd say Bob Marley. Not only could he sing well, but there was a passion and hope in his voice that was wonderful.

Chris O., Friday, 24 September 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone say Nat King Cole yet?

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

Maybe Judy Garland, possibly Jo Stafford.

Easy.

Minnie Riperton.

(Steve Albini will do as well.)

(...this is where I admit I was waiting for someone to mention me -- twice now!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Caetano Veloso (even if you don't love his music, you have to admit he's just gotten better as a singer); Gilberto Gil; Virginia Rodrigues.

Mory Kante; Youssou N'Dour; Baaba Maal.

Jackie Wilson; David Ruffin; Ray Charles.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 25 September 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Roy Orbison completely owns this thread.

Elliot (Elliot), Saturday, 25 September 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I second the Kate Bush and David Sylvian mentions on this thread.

I won't even mention you-know-who from you-know-them because everyone will want to kill me from an overdose of fandom. Though when I listen to that voice + that sound, I feel like I'm at home, no matter where I am.

Chrissie Hynde (yes, her) and Tony Bennett (yes, him) also both make me swoon.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 25 September 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Since someone took all my answers already (Liz Fraser, Harriet Wheeler, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Dusty), I'll have to go for Margo Timmins.

I kind of want to say Sophie Ellis Bextor as well, but she does the wrong kind of song to be considered dreamy.
