Rock. Bottom.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want confirmation that I'm not going insane. The subject line --> the name of a band whose video made an appearance on MTV last night. sub-Seattle grungey sound, a bridge ripped straight from "..And Justice for All" David Fincher-stylee video, v. "serious" young men with a logo, which is - get this - the "infinity" symbol, no doubt doodled from the two "o"s in their name and energetically agreed on. hooba fucking STAAAANK

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want confirmation that I'm not going insane.

From us? You poor soul.

*checks*

Indeed, this band exists. Oh well.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow. I can't believe the domain was available!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If their name is a hybrid of "Hoobanger" and "Stankonia", then CLASSIC.

Tim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I fear we're not so lucky.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i know these kids. they were called hoobastank when they were ska funk 2 years ago. they had horns and everything.

chaki, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You stole my Worst Band Name entry, Tracer. I noticed these guys on the TV the other day and I thought the name might be some kind of glitch. But it wasn't.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but the album cover looks like a dan flavin sculpture in marfa. i wonder if that was om purpose

anthony, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

These duds are lined up with Puddle of Mudd, Adema, Drowningpool as the most useless inept commercial cack rock newcomers of 2001. Music this so mind numbing bland and sterile harks back to days of a legion of second division 80s dumb ass hair metal.

DJ Martian, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chaki's right, they've gone from "wacky" ska punk with horns and an album called "They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To" to sub-Incubus in a single bound.

I suspect they're another of Maura's Stealth Christians, too. I mean, the infinity sign as a logo?

scott p., Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hoobastankillaz!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haw.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

man.. i remember when incubus was wacky ska funk.

chaki, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just take a deep breath, relax, and think of the reappropriation possibilities in ten years' time. Buy a Puddle of Mudd t-shirt & carefully pack it away while you still can.

daria gray, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
Am I the only person who thinks that Hoobastank isn't THAT bad?

I stand by what I wrote in this review for Blender. And the massive success of the title track kinda backs up my Journey statement. I'd rather hear that song than "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" any day.

Ant (which is what they call Ant'neys in my old hood), I'm not sure I'd one to hear either one of those songs again, but at least the Journey is memorable. I can't say the same for Hoobastank. Worst band name. Ever.

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I said they had a horrible name in that review, but "The Reason" is totally memorable! I could sing it to you right now.

I'm not a perfect persuhhhhhnnn....

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I'm just blocked by stank. Or hooba.

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus the dissing of this song feels like some lazy "ugh inescapable power ballad" shit. Nobody even notices that the singer says he's found a reason for him to change who he used to be, which is impossible since you can't change the past! The best alternate rhyme I can come up with is: "I've found a reason to say/I'll change who I am today" though it's difficult enough that I can see why he didn't bother.

Just like the Jet hate baffles me, Hoobastank hate baffles me because danceable retro-rock and relatively sludge-free nasal earnestness bother me a lot lot less than the downright DIRGEY shit that clutters rawk radio waves.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck Eddy and I used to have conversations like this all the time, where he'd try to convince me why some modern rawk blah song (at least to me) was more interesting than it seemed. The lyrics might be interesting but the music does nothing for me. The Matchbox Twenty "I wanna push you around" song falls into this catagory. I like the concept (standing up to someone who has pushed you around), but I hate the music.

I don't actively dislike Jet, they just sound like 9000 other THE bands, except for the one song that reminds me of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i totally agree that that song's memorable anthony, just like images from rotten.com

but: classic for their name.

I'm not a perfect person
as many things I wish I didn't do
but I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
and so I have to say before I go
that I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
to change who I used to be
a reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
it's something I must live with everyday
and all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
and be the one who catches all your tears
that's why I need you to hear

I've found a resaon for me
to change who I used to be
a reason to start over new
and the reason is you
and the reason is you
and the reason is you
and the reason is you

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
and so I have to say before I go
that I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
to change who I used to be
a reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
a side of me you didn't know
a reason for all that I do
and the reason is you

hoobastank in VU lyric copping shocker!

jake in portland (cerybut), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

They definitely have beaten Eve 6 for the title of Most Successful Emo Band (And Tough Shit To Emo Fans That Don't Want To Admit Said Band Is Emo Cuz Goddamn Is This Band Emo).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked them playing live on Howard Stern the other day, where Howard was just banging one note on a keyboard, slightly out of rhythm, for the whole song.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The performance of "The Reason" on the MMVA was just horrific. Anthony, you've gone mental. It's not even worth comparing to "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'", which keeps cramming the hooks in.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

They hoobasuck.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 25 June 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

mr. miccio's love of the hoobastank SO totally does NOT surprise me.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 25 June 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I ain't talkin' bout love, Eisbar. I'm just saying their trains run on time.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 03:51 (eight years ago)

Ugh, ugh, ugh. Possibly the worst one you've covered yet. I may hate the experience of listening to "Moves Like Jagger" even more, but at least I understand how that one was a hit. "The Reason" is so bereft of anything remotely pleasurable that its success baffles me as much now as it did at the time.

I'm live tweeting my reaction to the new album if anyone is interested

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 23 October 2022 21:31 (three years ago)

there's a Sydney band called Rastawookie

in my head these two bands are adjacent simply because they are both in the top 0.00001% of awful band names that are actively painful to ever hear or read.

meat and two vdgg (emsworth), Sunday, 23 October 2022 21:49 (three years ago)

I will see your Hoobastank and Rastawookie and raise you a Psychefunkapus.
