Wank

I say: not necessarily. Parts of Amon Duul II's brilliant sophomore effort "Yeti" can certainly qualify as wank. But you won't hear anybody using that term to describe it. You'll hear "Hypnotic", "freak out", "wild", etc. instead. But John Zorn, for example, seems to be a much easier target for that term.

Is it just making a career out of it that qualifies it as wank?

I thought "masturbatory" implies clinging onto some nifty trick and playing it over the course of some epic 20 minute set. Turntablism, for instance, is often blamed for this sort of thing. Put your hand on the 1200 and move it back and forth, back and forth.. etc. etc...

For interesting results, we can cross this thread with the "Sexless" thread and consider that maybe since masturbation equals sex-minus- partner (partner signifying love/emotion)... masturbatory music implies a cheap thrill minus love/emotion or, in general terms, any substantial EFFECT. The longevity aspect of the music allows it take on some metaphorical representation of musically jacking off.

Granted, casual sex can also be an emotionally uninvolved thing. However, saying "oh god, this is such wank" gets the point across better than "oh this is only casually sexy".

Masturbatory music is bad because, like masturbation, unless it's artfully done or you've got a more deviant sense of sexy, it's only fun for the person doing it, and not really all that much fun for the people watching it.

I'm guilty of using this word, even though I've got nothing against masturbation. What I meant in using it is that 'wank' is music that seems more anti-social, whereas I prefer performances that engage the audience.
