chaki, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

utter shite. what's funny about them ? If they're a joke then they're a very lame one.

...., Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've liked what I've heard by them. It's very Rarrrr! RAAARRRR! RARRRR!

They get played in goth clubs a lot.

DV, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wuv that mega-expansive naff-anarchist fantasy video for the comedy value. Very sturm und drang.

stevo, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In small doses they are all right. On the "Lost Highway" soundtrack (didn't Trent Reznor do that?) there was one good song. I think it was even called Rammstein. Music to dance to at night at the cemetery.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah. Music to trash a frat halloween party to.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rammstein are hilarious. their videos get almost continuous airplay in mtv russia, so i ended up watching a lot of their videos. liek the one where theyre all working in a gold mine and some vamp girl comes and spanks them all i think its called 'undersheinen ticshen fischen auch den erdangen' or something.

ambrose, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dont you mean sonne? the one about snow white and the band are the dwarfs

Nitzer Ebb updated for the "industrial" 90s. Total and utter dud.

three years pass...
I don’t get why Rammstein don’t get more love.

I finally got Reise, Reise and again—most interesting band on Earth. Best drummer I’ve heard in forever. Got the pocket-groove but not afraid and able to slip into weird temporal slipstream, all BJ Wilson-like.

We get an acoustic industrial taking blues, a metal Wagner love song with what sounds like three sad orchestras done in some bizarre time signature. We get a ‘standard’ Rammstein shout-stomper—but with an accordion solo (!).

We get 'Amerika' with the defining triplet of the year:
"We’re all living in Amerika
Coca Cola
Wonderbra"

Following that is some lumbering beast of a song with Til Lindemann dueting with a French girl who sounds like Minnie Mouse.

Every song is insanely well-crafted, crazily well-played, often funny and morose in that eldritch beerhall manner the band has pretty much patented.

Plus, there’s the song about the dick-eating cannibal—done as an anthem with inspirational power chords and the aforementioned orchestra in triplicate.

Why I should care about the newest indie rockreviavalretrotransneowhatever is beyond me when I have something great like this. It's funny, it's morbid, it's miserable, it's so now.

iang, Thursday, 20 January 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. Great album, great band, astonishing live show.

Soukesian, Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently "Moskau" was written with t.A.T.u in mind for the female vocal. Missed opportunity, that one. "Reise Reise" is great.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

More and more I have become convinced that Rammstein is the best pop band of today. And that by achieving this, they have risen above Laibach, Nitzer Ebb, Samael and everyone they've been accused of borrowing from. Every song sounds like a single. Impeccable choice of remixers too.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

They differ from all their influences in being able to right perfect pop songs, as Siegbran says. Plus they have impeccably bad taste.

moley, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

They have impeccable smart bad taste.

And they do write perfect pop songs in an amzing array of styles.

They're Depeche Mode with muscle.

Ian in Brooklyn, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Ian in Brooklyn, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Not much to add to Siegbran. Except that I still can't get 'Reise, Reise' out of the player for long, and I've got to hear some of these remixes.

Incidentally, anyone heard the orchestral versions of Rammstein songs done lieder-style by the composer Torsten Rasch for Deutsche Grammophon?
Got respectful reviews in the classical columns of the broadsheets, and I'm mightily tempted.

Soukesian, Monday, 25 April 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

It's quite likely the only pop->classical jump that's respectable as serious music, but I couldn't find a personal need for early 20th century style, modernist orchestrations.

Ian in Brooklyn, Monday, 25 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Utter classic. Delicate and lovely songwriting hidden in a hilarious heap of Teutonic Grand Guignol.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. I have the first two albums and the live album, but I'm beginning to think I missed out by not investigating more, given all these posts. Ian and Siegbran are trustworthy souls.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

that, and gary numan likes them!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

so where do i start with rammstein, people??

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

My wife is a way bigger fan than me, so we have the last three albums and the live video. My favorite album is Mutter, but I like Sehnsucht a lot, too. I haven't listened to Reise, Reise enough to let it really grow on me, but I saw the video for "Keine Lust" on Headbanger's Ball Saturday night and it fucking kills! They're all in these amazing fat suits, and when Til Lindemann squats down and starts headbanging at the moment the song starts to get super hard 'n' heavy, I laughed out loud. The only one not in a fat-suit is the keyboardist; he's in a wheelchair, contorting himself like Steven Hawking. It's the rudest video I've seen in years.

I interviewed Rammstein once; in person, Til Lindeman reminds me of Peter Stormare in Fargo.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

I think Mutter is a good starting point (although the first CD, Herzeleid, is more rockin and ooh-scary Teutonic.)

On Mutter, I'd suggest listening first to Mein Herz Brennt, for its sheer fury-angst, rumble-Zep groove and Bernard Hermann-y string stabs.

Then I'd zip to the last track, Nebel, which shows off in a quieter register what OTT great songwriters they are; Martin Gore would kill to write a drinking song so tunefully miserable.

Then there's Zwitter, the best song about a sad tranny utilizing a major chord chorus, like, evah.

And of course the title song, which really should come with Bic lighters included. And really, a bunch of German guys with Arnold muscles singing a vast orchestra-laden song about missing thei Mom? Does anything get that good?

Ian in Brooklyn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

So how come no US tour dates?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, if I were a German with a flagship song called "Amerika" I might have second thoughts about visiting Bush's reserve.

unconscious, honey (FE7), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

"Benzin" is their worst single yet, so I hope the rest can make up for it.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 27 October 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

So...I don't suppose that if I like the PSB and Black Strobe remixes that I would actually *like* Rammstein, would I? What do they normally sound like? Are there other good remixes of them? I like all the choir stuff, it's great!

Also - where can one see their videos online?

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Benzin might be their worst single yet, but it's still great!

nutrasweet glider, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

No US release date for this album, though cduniverse.com will have it cheap next week, so whatever. Now please, a tour this year...

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I need a tour as well. I've been waiting to see them for like 4 years now. "Sonne" is still one of the best tracks of the 00's.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

what i wrote about them 8 years ago in rolling stone seems rather obvious now:

xhuxk, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

The new single "Rosenrot" is brilliant, a return to the Rammstein-goove of "Ich Will". Remixes by Chris Vrenna, Jagz Kooner and Northern Lite. The album is solid but not as good as "Reise, Reise" and "Mutter", but maybe it will grow on me more.

Aja, Friday, 7 September 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not one bit surprised. They're very musical, the songs are strong and catchy and Till can really sing. That big, melancholy voice of his is the sort of thing you don't hear very much anymore, outside of the opera house anyway.

'Reise, Reise' still getting steady play here.

Their shows are great, their music is made for this.

Thing is with Rammstein, after 25 years that lyrical shtick they use in at least half their songs is wearing a bit thin - “obviously this song is about x...PLOT TWIST!!! it’s actually about something else!”

They do it a number of times on last year’s album:

“ah this is a sweet song about a kid who sees his older sister go to work and she gives him a nice doll - PLOT TWIST she’s a prostitute! And she gets killed before his eyes! And the kid’s real fucked up now!”

“it’s a sensitive ballad about a dude comparing his girl to a diamond - PLOT TWIST she’s not so nice and a diamond is really just a cold hard stone!”

Siegbran, Thursday, 30 January 2020 09:18 (six years ago)

My older sister is a massive fan of theirs, I think she's going to Belfast(?) to see them later this year.

I caught Rammstein's first North American show in forever last weekend in Montreal, and it exceed any and all expectations I had. Loud as hell, the best sound I've ever experienced at a huge outdoor concert, and the production for the three hour show was absolutely wild. Funny, over the top, wickedly satirical, but quite pretty as well. If you haven't seen the "Sonne" youtube clips from the last few years, they've made the song into a show-stopping spectacle. And that fire is heckin' hot.

One thing I got a real kick out of is how they pump Rammstein deep cuts on the PA, the opening act covers Rammstein on piano, and they actually roll closing credits at the end, which I think is a super gracious gesture to their crew.

They're rolling through the States right now (more dates to come in 2023) so if you have a chance to see this show, by all means go!
