Cos they're both lovely.

Perlon's is more "high-concept" whereas Kompakt's is more playful, which fits with the character of the labels for me.

three years pass...

kompakt seems a bit all over the shop these days. how about perlon vs cadenza...?

haitch, Monday, 19 November 2007 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

PERLON! PERLON! PERLON!

Most sizable labels have pretty good graphic design, but perlon has them all beat. I never got the uproar about the dot anyways.

Ps. Re Kompakt: http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/thumb/a/af/300px-Weisenhof-1927.jpg

uproar about the dot

is this a reference to the TOTAL covers?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:34 (seventeen years ago)

all this records look really garish next to REAL minimal minimal techno minimal label art: pure plastic, ifach, trelik, etc

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

perlon over kompakt but sahko uber alles.

stirmonster, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

ultimate perlon?

haitch, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:57 (seventeen years ago)

some of the perlon sleeves have been disgusting this year, that red/bogeygreen colour scheme they've been using is gross. i liked it when they were purple and black last year. check out the art for the new melchior productions album:

for a little counter-programming, I've really enjoyed Circus Company's graphic design lately...

Ha, Musiquee Risquee can be so kitschy and gaudy for such a good label! And he above is only the tip of the iceberg, the bruno pronsato one is another thread in itself.

I myself though about simple when first reading this thread, really nice stuff.

and also,(the wavy line isn't available on my keyboard)Scape! Probably better than the lot of techno labels (other than perlon, whose 'master your typography, and all else will follow' approach works to no end)

Is this turning into a thread for well designed covers of electronic albums, because in that case:

I love the whole black and white photo on a solid plane style dial is using.

mehlt, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

don't know why that didn't turn out, nevertheless I'll try again:

and

I, by the way, neer cared all that much for Profan. Could never take messy block writing of their logo seriously.

mehlt, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

^^ agreed! Profan covers >>>> Profan logo

I'm not sure about Simple Records to be honest, it's all a bit too coffee table to me. Just like their music.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

The Simple cover above was designed by Michael C Plaice ex-Designers Republic. I think they work their angle device and strong type quite well on their site and 12s.

rchinn, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

It's not denying the professionalism, and it is well executed, but it just doesn't do much for me. Perlon I love, however.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

perlon has some of the best record design around. i think it's done by double standards. it's changed a lot but the similarities between the early b+w/yellow and the newer olive/red sleeves are unmistakable. i also dislike the current olive/red color scheme. i read somewhere that they just print up a set number of them and only do a redesign when they run out. i guess this excludes the artist LPs, cause those are always different. so they are stuck with whatever bad idea they had six months ago.

sadly, i don't really like the cadenzas, although they reflect the music pretty well.

those profans are awesome.

and kompakt has a dot. it's barely distinctive and i wonder if the majority of record shoppers even notice the pattern. and when they use photos for album covers... remember dj koze? very inconsistent. i would say underdesigned.

elan, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

circus company is on fire at the moment in both music and art design, this sleeve is awesome:

what album is that?

filthy dylan, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

i'm also digging the karat graphic design, big pastel psychedelic cartoons:

http://images.juno.co.uk/full/CS289723-01A-BIG.jpg

serves as a nice antidote to the usual clean, tasteful and restrained kompakt/perlon esque design, must be a french thing (though bar 25 seems to be following a similar aesthetic)

xpost it is antislash "we are the copy and paste" ep
