LOCK PLANET EARTH

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:26 (twenty years ago)

100% of sales will be attributed to the "joke present" craze.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Gear!, perhaps you would like to contribute to my Regis Philbin thread that no one gives a fuck about? It was created with a similar motive, I suspect.

Regis Philbin "When You're Smiling"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Shouldn't it be called "Hung by the chimney with care"?

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:45 (twenty years ago)

I like how the cover shows a Christmas tree but the font on "Hung for the Holidays" is vaguely Hebrew.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Two albums, that's more than any of the actual winners have managed, isn't it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahaha! Uh why does it look like he's on South Park?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Captain Sleep is OTM, that would've been a much better title.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I was laughing at Ned's pithy observation btw, the prospect of this album isn't at all amusing obv

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Many might prefer "Hung by His Neck Until Dead".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

BTW, this is a great cover. I hope they don't fuck it up with a UPC, "with the hit single" blurbs", etc cuz it looks like a lichtenstein at the moment.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha I thought for sure that was a fake album cover.

We Found William Hung Here: "Gone in 7 1/2 Seconds"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Who puts their Christmas tree in the middle of the room?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

any other title wouldn't have a double entendre quality to it! methinks someone is having a laugh at poor William's expense.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

So, he does have Down's, right?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

gee gear ya think?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

One could argue that these CDs have more entertainment value then the legitimate "Idol" winners', in a Wesley Willis sort of way?
If Hung starts saying "rock on new york, rock on chicago" after every song and starts randomly singing about donkey dicks in the middle of his tunes I would be tempted to buy his stuff actually. At the very least he needs Rick Rubin to start picking his covers for him.
Has he done Common People yet?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:25 (twenty years ago)

wesley willis records are not entertaining, they are depressing

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Well I wouldn't know, I've never bought them. I have heard a song or two here and there, and it seems fun in very small doses. SOME people really like that stuff and it might help explain the appeal of this.

Either that or some people are zombies that will buy anything they saw on TV?
I'm sure the hardcore Idol fans own these...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago)

I bet this guy is Hung.

Huh huh huh
Huh huh huh
Huh huh huh

See, he is a desexualized Asian man but his name implies a large penis. Hahahahaha!!!

I usually hate the Village Voice identity politics but their article on the inherent racism of the ironic Hung worship was OTMFM.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:54 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)
it's really really not worth getting. and i'm not talking about the cd.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I get it, he's Asian, but Asian people don't celebrate Christmas! Because they are godless communists! Ha ha ha!

see??? it WASN'T worth getting, was it.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I also think it's terrible that we elect an idiot for President just so we can make ill-mannered jokes about the "Bush campaign" and such.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I swear I heard something relating to that on TV or something...

Nowell, Monday, 4 October 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

William Hung IS television. He sums it all up doesn't he? Well, him and Bush....

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago)

William Hung and Bush...geez...no comment on either of 'em. I don't know anything about politics.

Nowell, Monday, 4 October 2004 20:37 (twenty years ago)

William Hung is the most important political figure in America today.
Bush likes the cocaine and spending money we don't have.
That's all you need to know.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Don't you wish ALL Christmas trees looked like that?

Joe (Joe), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

X post
Smartass! I know who they are...I just don't care.

Nowell, Monday, 4 October 2004 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Clearly you need to watch more television.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Wesley Willis=Musician
William Hung=Joke

Let's not get them confused, okay?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Does Hung have Klinefelter syndrome?

http://www.emedicine.com/PED/topic1252.htm

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago)

I ask this seriously.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah despite my reservations about the VV overall their Hung article was definitely OTM.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 4 October 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I read that Wesley Willis made very bad music. Heard the same thing about Beat Happening.

Nowell, Monday, 4 October 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Nowell, you have been fed filthy, filthy lies!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 22:11 (twenty years ago)

(actually they do suck)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 22:12 (twenty years ago)

And Half Japanese - I bet they suck, too. I have that 'Kill Rock Stars' compilation and it has that stupid Jad Fair song on it.

Nowell, Monday, 4 October 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

The Jad Fair "Short Songs" EP still pwns.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Plays With Noble Sincerity

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 22:33 (twenty years ago)

DON'T FUCK WITH WESLEY!
Rock n Roll McDonalds has TEN TIMES the heart of your coldplay album.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I like some Wesley Willis songs sincerely but I can't seem to articulate why, because objectively they're awful.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Objectively they're wonderful.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

CUT YOUR MULLET.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago)

"She Loves Me Truly" w/the Fiasco is really awesome. If it weren't for Wesley's vocals, though, it'd just be a really shitty alt-rock track.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

"Batman thought he was cool... He was a fucking asshole in the first place."

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:23 (twenty years ago)

"I called him a fucking dipstick...It was my fault for not being cool in Lawrence, Kansas, that morning"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 23:25 (twenty years ago)

So is Hung an attempt to create a market driven Willis?
Is that why it's so terrible?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Nowell, any more dissing Half Jap and you are totally GROUNDED, young lady. No phone, no computer, 10 o'clock bedtime! Oh yeah, and go listen to "The Band That Would Be King"!

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Wesley Willis was *the* personification of rock n roll: repetitive, unstable, exuberant, and willing to do anything for a dollar. He recorded some great tunes, that man. He was a joy to behold.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 4 October 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Review
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Believe it or not, William Hung had more time to record his holiday album -- the oh so cleverly titled Hung for the Holidays -- than he did his full-fledged debut, Inspiration, which was kicked out in a matter of weeks while American Idol was in the midst of its third season. He and his producers -- executive producer Dee "Pitboss" Sonaram and producer Giuseppe D., who both need to be singled out by name, since blame has to be assigned -- could have used this time to create backing tracks that sounded a little fuller, since that would mean that Hung for the Holidays would have sounded at least like karaoke instead of a Casio set on automatic. This is the cheapest-sounding record in recent memory; it sounds as if it was recorded in less time that it takes to play. And the weirdest thing about it is that Hung has gotten better as a vocalist in the six months that separate Inspiration and Hung. Make no mistake, he ain't good, but he sings with more confidence and at least vaguely sings something resembling the melody. And that, of course, means it's not nearly as interesting or funny as Inspiration. There's nothing that comes close to his embarrassing, soaring wordless vocals on the coda of "I Believe I Can Fly" -- the only thing that elicits a chuckle is "Vixen" being called "Rixen" on "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," which isn't much. Even the "hidden bonus track" of "We Are the Champions" is bland, with the only thing funny about it being that Hung has a bad voice. Which means Hung for the Holidays is no present. After all, there's nothing worse than an intentional novelty record that isn't funny. Unless it's "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." That's worse than Hung for the Holidays. But not by much.

I used to LOVE "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer".
