the soul years comp on kent may be my favourite record ever.

Often unjustly neglected: the pre-solo stint as replacement for Clyde McPhatter with Billy Ward & the Dominoes. Nothing as great as the previous line-up's big highlights, but fine stuff, and I think following Clyde is what led to JW's whacky style on things like Reet Petite.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I checked the tracklist to the Soul Years comp, and it does look really great, but if it doesn't have "Higher and Higher" then it's not completely right. This is one case where the artist's biggest hit really does seem to transcend everything else - not just in JW's catalog, but in All Of Pop Music For All Time.

Jackie seems to have had some kind of really shit lifetime contract with Brunswick. Imagine how great he could have been if he'd been working all those years with his buddy Berry Gordy at Motown.

I have a close friend who saw Jackie Wilson in concert at Baton Rouge, Lousiana in the mid-60s, headlining over Aretha Franklin. She says it was so exciting, with women screaming and passing out, that it scared the bejeezus out of her. She's never attended another pop concert since.

S: "I Get the Sweetest Feeling." Vocals straight into the stratosphere, and he finally gets a tastefully understated backing track.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

funny have been listening to him (and other soul musicians lately). i love "lonely teardrops." esp how all the instruments - or at least that's how i remember it - seem to be percussive. and they also leave so much silence so jackie can do his vocal aerobics.

Jackie Wilson could be destroyed more or less altogether. There have been considerably better music recorded by other people with the same family name.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If anybody's ever passed out at a Beach Boys show, it was from ennui.

briania (briania), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I dare not hope Geir's referring to the Gap Band.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon Geir was the producer of TotP when Dexy's played that time.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, rock & soul Wilsons ranked in order:

1. Beach Boys (Brian, Dennis and Carl), if only for Pet Sounds
2. Jackie, per this thread
3. Gap Band (Uncle Charlie), for hitting it on the one
4. Gin Blossoms (Robin), who deserved better
5. Wilson Phillips (Carney), just 'cause I can't think of any others.

Wilson Pickett, being of the wrong surname, does not count.

six years pass...

Can't believe this is the only Jackie Wilson thread on here and it's spoiled with Geir trolling.

Got this today, and whichever exec at MCA/ Brunswick who has the bright ideas deserves some kinda something - the Basie group as swinging Rn'B combo.

Fantastic singer. I heard his music from a young age; my parents bought the reissue of "Reet Petite" which became a UK number one in 1986 and I remember dancing to it as a tot while it played on the stereo.

Reading about Wilson's life atm and I'm struck by a) how much of a scumbag he could be, and b) how tragic his personal life was.

Also can't believe he was initially buried in an unmarked grave. Presumably someone was paying for his medical bills during his coma; couldn't they have bought him a headstone?

(Very tempted to seek out that Basie collaboration!)

A lot of Wilson's records may not have aged all that well, but something like "I Just Can't Help It" from 1962? Listening to that one, you can just see Jackie Wilson. He's down at the edge of the stage, reaching out, his vocals locked in with the rhythm section. Maybe he'll roll off into the audience, so the women can run to help him.

I've had this for a long time:

http://www.e-profession.com/images/jackie_wilson_greatest_hits.jpg

Not sure if it's on CD--it covers all the basics.

clemenza, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 20:15 (nine years ago)

Also on the Vinyl tip--Epic's "The Jackie Wilson Story" collections from the '80s--iirc there's two of them, Vol.1 a double and a Pt.2 single--are still affordable and worth picking up.

Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 6 July 2016 20:23 (nine years ago)

There wasa 3 volume series of him that I think was supposed to be good. I only got one volume though.
//e.snmc.io/lk/f/l/0036e9626f9add6f3268270aacd3fa68/1795938.jpg
but 2cds and reasonably full discs.

I just chanced on it since the local cd place seemed to get in a lot of remaindered stuff. So may be long gone but I think it's a satisfying set.

Love this song so much, proper grown up 70's soul. The whole shtick - worldly playboy secretly longing for love and stability - is a bit cheesy on paper but boy does Jackie sell it. Should be in the canon of the greatest soul songs imo.

Edsel did some good 2cd sets of his back catalogue. I think I have the 3rd volume. Need to find it.

I think this was something I had put on when we had access to youtube in the bike repaor workshop
