Well?

I only saw Querelle and YSS but I was very impressed with both of them. The girl drummer out of YSS was tres cute and looked totally wired. I spent ages trying to work out if the singer/guitarist was Johnny Greenwood.

YSS were very noisy indeed – I’m not sure if I’d like them on record but live they just blew me away. NME should champion them rather than the godawful Razorlight.

I arrived just as Bikini Atoll took the stage, I thought they were a bit Jamesy but I didn't really take to them.

The reason I went was to see The Telescopes who are presently in full-on experimental noise mode. They played one long track which consisted of some bloke on a theremin, Jo strumming wildly and continuously and Stephen doing something with two guitars and an electric sander or some other weird gizmo and a violin bow. At times it was satisfyingly brutal but it's hardly ground breaking.

The Oxes started promisingly, I know nothing about them and was slightly surprised when I found myself standing next to one of the guitarists as I was hiding at the back of the venue. Hooray for wireless guitar shenanigans. They soon became intensely though annoying with their repetetive empty rock riffs and tiresome stage antics.

Damo Suzuki was awesome. He hd a great band behind him who buried themselves in some huge industrial grooves while the sprightly Damo yelled incomprehensively at the audience like a bereaved Yoko Ono. Truly great and a privelege.

I arrived just in time for YMSS, who were brilliant as usual. As for the other bands, I didn't get Vibracathedral Orchestra (got bored of their set at ATP as well), I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed Large Number (I didn't like Add N to X), Oxes were amazing as was Damo Suzuki. Thinking back about the Damo set, it's scary how that it was completely improvised.

I've got some photos up on my website if you're interested... http://www.nunuworldmusic.co.uk

Damo's set was improvised!!!

Nice photos, anyone know what that thing is Stephen Telescope was abusing his guitars with?

holojames (holojames), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It looked like some kind of toy (if you're referring to the blue thing on the table). I think Damo Suzuki is just going round the world playing with local groups of musicians, and just improvising pieces as they go. So in our case we had musicians who are/were in bands like Reynolds and Wolves of Greece,.

"The girl drummer out of YSS was tres cute"

- hahaha! I think you have the wrong band; I'm sure Graeme will be flattered though.

"I spent ages trying to work out if the singer/guitarist was Johnny Greenwood"

- he wasn't.

Simon, some of the band do look quite feminine though, especially when Andy went through that phase of wearing hairclips!

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the YSS drummer whilst being incredibly tight wasn't really my type (or sex more to the point) and I meant the drummer out of Querelle of course - I've just read the reviews on their site and whoever said she looks as though she's climaxing whilst drumming was OTM.

I want both bands to play Bristol.

one year passes...

Oh good grief, 2 days was ruin but it was WORTH IT for Quack Quack.

Anyway! 2007! Rother and Moebius!! Plus Shit and Shine and some other folks. I am so excited. I haven't made it to a gig in Oxford for ages but I'd better be able to make it to this.

Woo, yay, etc.

two months pass...

Tomorrow! Michael Rother! Dieter Moebius!

Also looking forward to Shit & Shine, who I hear are awesome live; Rothko, who I haven't really caught up with lately but I'll be interested to see since the lineup has changed so much since I last saw them; and Einstellung, who I'm quite excited about as the CD I bought of theirs from the nice Bearos guy at this last year was a one-track half-hour slab of motorik goodness. And a chance to see the new look ex-Zodiac, because I've been slack about gig-going lately and not made it in yet.

Nobody?

(Last year I spoke to one Whiney G Weingarten and did not realise until afterwards who he was, not that I'm on ILX enough to expect anyone not to be creeped out by recognition anyway. So, uh, hi. Great day all round.)

Shit&Shine are pretty rad, you'll prob not be disappointed

DJ Mencap, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

The new look Zodiac (well downstairs anyway) is a bit rubbish. Apparently upstairs hasn't changed much.

I'm not going though, because I'm going to see Beirut in London!
