lenny kravitz's rock n roll is dead vs. prince's rock n roll is alive

lenny, for all his faults, made a song that actually rocks (not sure if the riff is all his though). even though he effectively says rocking is dead, he also disses rappers, which i quite like him for (i loved hip hop before i did rock though). plus he sounds nice and *genuinely* angry and bitter for once. bitterness is good - more please.

prince's answer back song is quite rubbish (it was on the b-side to the gold single in 1995) and for one thing doesnt really even rock. plus, if youre gonna say rnr is alive, the last thing you wanna do is justify it by saying its alive in MPLS of all places. well you could if you got husker du or bob dylan on the track but prince didnt do that (which is a good thing). plus, he made an answer back record to lenny kravitz, which despite them being friends, is kinda lame (even if he is an easy target).

prince is friends with lenny k? ughhhh losing respect

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lenny Kravitz sez rock is dead"
...then Lenny mutters under his breath "...and I'm raping it's corpse..."

prince is friends with lenny k? ughhhh losing respect
Why? Prince needs friends too! (Anyways, Isn't Kravitz just Prince without the Funk?)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

They probably get together and diss rappers.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Anyways, Isn't Kravitz just Prince without the Funk?"

No. That's kinda ignorant.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Kravitz appears on Prince's live Rave unto the Joy Fantastic DVD. If you want to check for the dissment of rappers.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they both do the one-man band thing. Prince just happens to be, you know, good.

(x-post)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen that. Doesn't Prince just destroy him in a guitar duel?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

but lennys music has ALWAYS been much more from a harder rocked out angle compared to prince's. even when lenny does funk or reggae or whatever, it sounds like a (hard) rock artist doing it.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose i should be grateful neither prince or lenny got compared to hendrix yet.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Me: "Anyways, Isn't Kravitz just Prince without the Funk?"
splooge: No. That's kinda ignorant.
Um, Ignorant as in "rude" or Ignorant as in "misinformed"? (Sorry, I'm from Philly)

Jordan: Well, they both do the one-man band thing. Prince just happens to be, you know, good.
Ouch.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

well i thought it was a bit ignorant as in misinformed. i gave some reasons for it upthread.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

both crap

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

one thing we should NOT do is officially recognize those two meanings of "ignorant" as valid.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to say it was a tad racist to say lenny and prince were of the same cloth but i thought that would be a bit OTT.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I still can't muster a response to the fact that Custos took offense to my dissing of Lenny Kravitz in comparison to motherfucking PRINCE.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I didn't take offense at all.
I'm saying "ouch" because it's so painfully true.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The lyrics make no sense:

"You can't even sing or play an instrument
So you just scream instead"

Yeah, duh. That's what rock n roll is!

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, well that makes sense then, Custos.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep spreading the truth, Jordan. No matter how much it hurts...keep spreading the truth.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and to make my position completely clear for the permanent record...
Although I don't have any vendetta against Lenny Kravitz (shit, I've done some bus-stop humming to some of his better tunes, and wouldn't mind buying his greatest hits cd ...if I could get it cheap...) Prince is still better.
In fact...
< PUTTING ON ASBESTOS UNDERWEAR>
...to say that Kravitz and Prince are in the same league, in any meaningful way, would be the psychotic ramblings of a urine-stained hobo.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, from those lyrics, maybe lenny wasnt dissing rappers, but other rockers!

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Real controversial opinion there, Custos.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, don't we all just love the opinions of psychotic rambling urine-stained hobos?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
U freaks have no idea about music in general or any of these artists work. I reckon the only stuff you guys have heard is on an fm/am frequency. Get out there and make a difference yourselves and stop being so judgemental. Music is music whether you love it or hate it. The mere fact that you are talking about these two artists says something all ready. They have made it and you guys are just talking shit on a computer.
