Elton John unimpressed by Madonna, accuses her of lip-synching
LONDON (AP) — It seems Elton John is not a Madonna fan.
Taking the stage at a music awards show Monday, John accused the queen of pop of lip-synching and said he was astonished she had been nominated for best live act.
“Since when has lip-synching been live?” John said.
“Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds (about $169 Cdn) to see them should be shot.
“That’s me off her ... Christmas card list,” he added. “But do I give a toss? No.”
There was no immediate comment from Madonna.
John, 57, was receiving a songwriting award at the Q awards, sponsored by a British music magazine.
Madonna, whose Re-Invention world tour stopped in Britain in August, did not win the best live act award. It went to British band Muse.
John has never been afraid to speak his mind. Last month he made headlines in Taiwan by telling photographers they were a bunch of rude, vile pigs.

Bob Mould made a good observation on his blog (after the vile pigs screamfest) that if the music career goes down hill Elton's got a great career as a wrestling manager ahead of him.

Hey, can anyone clarify what Elton was so bitchy about in that airport in (wtfwi?) Singapore?

Too many crocodiles, not enough rock.

Elton: Taiwan media 'rude pigs'

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"We'd love to get out of Taiwan if it's full of people like you. Pig! Pig!"

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it requires money. dang it. sorry.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet he really does care about being dropped from Madonna's Christmas card list.

Nemo (JND), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to make light of someone with a weight problem, but a dude that thoroughly chunkified shouldn't be calling anyone "pig". Because, shit, Elton has both the snout and the figure for it himself.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit the caption could just as easily be Elton: "Oink! Oink!"

“That’s me off her . . . Christmas card list,” he added. “But do I give a toss? No.”
Madonna’s spokesman Liz Rosenberg rejected John’s allegations.
“Madonna does not lip-synch nor does she spend her time trashing other artists,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “She sang every note of her Re-Invention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well paid for her hard work.”
Rosenberg indicated Madonna was not taking John’s remarks too seriously.
“Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice ... or naughty,” she said.

This act of clever diplomacy explains why Madonna still has power in the industry and Elton John is, lets face facts, a washed-up has-been.
(This ignores the fact that Madonna has spent the last 10 years repeatedly jumping the shark.)

Is it possible that EJ is headed for a Mariah-type TOTAL MELTDOWN???

(the evil part of me hopes so)

Huk-L, Monday, 4 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Elton meltdowns are so '76.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Elton's right, though.

About Madonna or the Taiwanese press?
Or both?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

a washed-up has-been.

Um, Madonna has been a has-been for a few years now.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Kabbalahists even celebrate Christmas?

actual jews who study the actual kabbalah would not generally celebrate xmas, no.

but the kabbalah centre, where madonna worships and which has virtually nothing to do any of that, is an entirely different thing. it doesn't consider itself any religion at all, and it doesn't see itself as being in conflict with its members beliefs in other religions. for whatever that's worth.

“She sang every note of her Re-Invention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well paid for her hard work.”

my guess is that madonna lip-syncs a lot less than most similar song-and-dance pop stars. but it's worth noting that it's fairly common in lip-sync situations to mix live singing with a pre-recorded lead vocal track, with a soundman controlling the mix of the two ... which means you could plausibly and truthfully claim you are singing every not of your tour live even while you lip-sync.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

not = note

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Billstevejim:Um, Madonna has been a has-been for a few years now.
I did stipulate that (quote) "...Madonna has spent the last 10 years repeatedly jumping the shark..." (end quote)
This is another way of implying that she is also a has-been.

Just wait, in 10 years, it'll be a fat, puffy, cranky Madonna that'll be snarling rubbish at reporters. Probably swing her walker at them, then trip and break her hip.
