Albums that ON THE WHOLE have been embraced in music history (by critics and the majority of fans) as being MISSES but whose titles are fantastic.

(** Note- Personally I like all of these albums, but this shouldn't be a like or dislike thread)

Rolling Stones Emotional Rescue
Queen Hot Space
Aerosmith Done With Mirrors

Aerosmith Night in the Ruts

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

done with mirrors is a pretty great triple entendre. i'm somewhat confused as to what's great about any of the others.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Lowe - Bowi

Dead Prez - Get Free Or Die Tryin'

(these are not so much "misses" as "never hit the wide radar")

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Snow, "Twelves Inches of Snow."

It's a triple pun!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that nick lowe one is so awesome (as a name, maybe as an ep).

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hasn't Rob Zombie had some pretty cool titles?

Huk-L, Monday, 4 October 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

jessica alba has the best titties. does that count?

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the third meaning of done with mirrors? I am tired, today.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

magic, cocaine, and something else, right?

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm through with reflective surfaces! I never wanna see my face again! Or not.

Huk-L, Monday, 4 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Done With Mirrors = can be read as

(a) this album was done with mirrors (recorded while flying) OR

(b) we, as a band, are done with mirrors, never going back again.

A clever bit of bet-hedging, I thought.

P.S. Agreed on the Snow album. I'd totally forgotten about that one.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, just what joseph said. and the third meaning would be the traditional meaning of the phrase "done with mirrors," i.e. we use sleight-of-hand and trickery in our art.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard it, and therefore can only assume it's lousy (a safe bet, judging from the only song of his I'd heard, the sub-Richard Marx crap hit "All I Need"); but title-wise, Jack Wagner's Don't Give Up Your Day Job was absolutely brilliant. It was his third album and he'd gotten nothing but bad reviews for his previous two. And all three of them were recorded as side projects from his main gig: Actor on TV's "General Hospital." ("Day Job" = "daytime soap", geddit?)

I have nothing but admiration if he thought that title up himself.

Done With Mirrors is a great title! The coke pun completely eluded me until just now. (Also happens to be their best Geffen LP ever but never mind.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The Great Redneck Hope - Behold the Fuck Thunder

abegrand, Monday, 4 October 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

S.O.D. - "Speak English Or Die"

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Clash Cut the Crap
Killing Joke Outside the Gate
Pretty much every album by the Plasmatics (though i adore them all)...notably New Hope for the Wretched, Beyond the Valley of 1984 and Coup D'Etat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, S.O.D. is really awesome.

Dan Dagger, Monday, 4 October 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

radiohead, hail to the thief

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

fact checking cuz SO OTM THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANY OTHER ANSWERS! LOCK THIS THREAD DOWN!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, that's a TERRIBLE title. There's an inexplicable love for terrible puns around here.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. That would be a good suggestion for "Lousy albums with crap titles".

o. nate (onate), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think like 96% of all black metal albums could qualify for this thread.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't understand the "worst albums" part of this thread title, since Done With Mirrors and Emotional Rescue are the best albums that Aerosmith and the Stones have made since 1980. Not sure what makes Emotional Rescue a great title, either, but I'm sleepy. Never noticed that Mirrors tri-pun either: especially poignant when you think of "every time i look in the mirror/all these lines in my face getting clearer/ooh, the past is gone," etc. (Except I was thinking they didn't go on the wagon til AFTER *Mirrors*. Am I wrong?)

I love the title of *Bittersuites to Succubi* by Cradle of Filth.

*Take Off Your Pants and Jacket* by Blink 182 is kinda funny, too.

chuck, Monday, 4 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

since Done With Mirrors and Emotional Rescue are the best albums that Aerosmith and the Stones have made since 1980

Chuck OTM here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, S.O.D. is really awesome.

Yeah but not nearly as awesome as the title!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the third meaning of done with mirrors? I am tired, today.

1. Cocaine

2. Vanity

3. Magic?

4. This was Aerosmith's "reunion" record with Joe Perry, having used a Perry duplicate on their last record. I think.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Jet's "Get Born" -- I always took that as a retort to the pubescent Vines' "Get Free". But the Jet album is as bad as what I take it to be mocking.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget Tin Machine, Oy Vey Baby.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hives "Your New Favourite Band" is a wonderful name for an album

bham, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oy Vey Baby is a CRAP title.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Faint - Blank Wave Arcade

I don't know if this album is that bad, but it sure hasn't pulled me back for repeated listens... and that title is just awesome.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em.

mike a, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My friends are in a band called VHS and the Babies, and they called their album Please, VHS and the Babies, Don't Hurt 'em. And it's awesome, so now the title has been used on a good album.
