I heard "I can't get behind that" on the radio and concluded that it's totally brilliant. Anyone got an opinion on this album.

The singing on "Common People" RUINS a potential classic.

Me: Do you have William Shatners album thats out today
Woolworths: Yeah hold on
(im both surprised and happy, guy goes somewhere and comes back with the Star Trek boxset)
Me: Yeah but do you have the music album?
Woolworths: I think we're out of stock of the soundtrack.

small town life is such a struggle.

I should have said the The singing part on "Common People" RUINS a potential classic. I'm assuming this is Rollins?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 October 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's Joe Jackson on "Common People". The Rollins song is "I Can't Get Behind That" and sounds *very* strange, judging from the snippet I just heard.

I wouldn't say "I cant get behind that" is so strange for Rollins. IShatner hasn't exactly been very productive in the music dept so I can't really judge. It's funny and it rocks. There's another track which seems to be about a father apologizing to his son for being a crap dad. Also great. This album is #1 on CITR 101.9 playlist, for any Vancouver BC residents.

I heard the vocalist on "Common People" is Ben Folds. It doesn't really sound much like Joe Jackson to me. Anyway on all these songs it's Shatner that makes it.

Ben Folds played on it but it's Joe Jackson on "Common People".

I almost bought this today when I couldn't find what I was there to buy.

I heard the album in the record shop today - it was very excellent.

End to end brilliant. I think this might just be my LP of the year.

I've heard it properly now and I think I'm in agreance with Jeff. I've never really heard any of Shatner's stuff before and always assumed it would be totally naff but there are some tracks (particularly "That's Me Trying" which kinda reminds me lyrically and musically of "Father And Son" by Cat Stevens) that are genuinely touching.

the genius of Shatner is his perpetual willingness to do absolutely anything, no matter how silly or self-effacing, and throw himself into it whole-heartedly. I can't wait to hear this.

two years pass...

I heard "It Hasn't Happened Yet" on the radio last night, I thought it was amazing.

It is indeed.

baaderonixx, Friday, 27 July 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

The whole album is excellent.

I was in Borders once when they were playing "You'll Have Time," and customers started getting pissed off. It was great.

I love the album to bits except for "Common People" which is counter to the point of the rest of it.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 28 July 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think the whole thing is amazing. Definitely one of my faves from the year it came out (2004 I think).

the next grozart, Saturday, 28 July 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

This is a true work of art. The honesty and sincerity of it is bracing.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 July 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Mmmh, I'm more in line with the thinking of the second post on this thread.
This album might be ok without the kickass rawk, or.... without any of the other collaborators. It's "The Transformed Man" that's a true work of art.

Rich Smörgasbord, Saturday, 28 July 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

I do like the Common People cover by itself, but always play the album from track 2 - it did its job as a herald sent out into the wilderness to draw public attention to the fact that Shatner would be releasing a new album, and doesn't need to be considered as part of the whole work.
