Why do people think Neumu.com is a good music site? i just read some of the content and it was awful.

because it was started by the guy who started Addicted to Noise which was the ONLY good music site on the web in 1996 or so. But it seems that Neumu has not done a great job updating their content (well, it has no advertising and is completely independantly run).

the guy that runs that site told me not to get into music writing.

i'm glad he did. i don't know how to write

i did a few reviews and a top 10 year-end list for neumu last year as kind of a "fun hobby" thing to do. all i can say is that i think michael the guy that runs it is a really nice guy and was very supportive to me about my writing. so i had a good experience with it and i do see some reviews i like on there (and others i don't but that's the nature of a site where you give a lot of new writers an outlet).

my boy Breihan did some writing on there (last time I ran him I had to ask him how to pronounce "neumu" when I brought it up), but in general it is a pretty boring site. in theory, a music site with a no-frills design (a la ILx) and not a lot of personality (as opposed to Pitchfork, which tries too hard to have "personality") is an idea that appeals to me, but it's just not very engaging and there's not that much content to begin with.

it seems like the sort of site that might ultimately cultivate some new talent (they're accepting new submissions right now actually), but presently it is kinda flat. but yanc3y used to write for them, and his stuff is persistently good. ph1l1p sherburne wrote there too, and unfortunately they haven't updated his section since '03. the sadness.

i like the sparse design, but the links don't quite work for their reviews, and the headings are a little confusing in the present format.

yeah, philip and i wrote for neumu from the beginning. michael goldberg is an insanely kind man, and the site definitely was a great venue for me after being canned by da 'fork. anthony carew is someone the ilm massive would love if they read him (especially you dave queen fans), and there are several other writers on there who churn out quality stuff. having been burned out a bit by working for rolling stone -- where he was maybe THE greatest music JOURNALIST ever (ask anyone from the reporting side and they'll say the same) -- neumu writers get lots of space to do whatever they want. some make good use of it, many others just spin their wheels in that space and never develop.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

woah, dangling modifier up there. after the rolling stone bit it should say "michael gives neumu writers lots of space..."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

canned by the 'fork! me too! there is a tremendous upside to that though...

it's tough to generate energy; the site needs a good working over, but it's true that it's a fine opportunity to have some genuine editing.

i'm hoping to share j1m m1ll3r stories with him, since he was my first chair at the new school.

more importantly, it's "whoa." or at least it used to be before the internet.

You think Michael Goldberg is a good journalist? What about critic?

aloicious, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

he's much more a journalist than a critic. even he would say so.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. He's a piss poor rock critic. Do you think people have more respect for music critics than music journalists?

three months pass...
I like neumu's design most, of all the online music magazines.

philip, have you canned your needledrops column? it was routinely the best piece of writing on the internet each month.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
it still looks nice though it could do with more interviews & more content
