Well?

Ally, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course everyone knows it was Kylie but you know we have to discuss it anyhow. Pff.

Ally, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is this singles that got airplay? Songs released as singles?

Melissa W, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think airplay is fair game (I personally couldn't tell you what was released or not these days, unfortunately).

Ally, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ugly - Bubba Sparxx
Chop Suey - System Of A Down
So Fresh So Clean - OutKast
My Red Hot Car - Squarepusher
*tie* Radiohead - Pyramid Song and Where the Party At - Jagged Edge feat. Nelly

chaki, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Too obvious and convenient for me, so exempted: Pyramid Song. Perfect song.

1. Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On
2. Aaliyah - We Need a Resolution
3. Britney Spears - I'm a Slave 4 U
4. Mystikal - Bouncin' Back (Was this a single? I heard about it here, so I have no idea)
5. Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style

This is just my top 5 singles I've actually heard on the radio this year.

Melissa W, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Missy Elliott: "Get Ur Freak On" 2. Daft Punk: "One More Time" 3. Daft Punk: "Digital Love" 4. Nelly: "Ride wit Me" 5. Petey Pablo: "Raise Up"

M. Matos, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Basement Jaxx, "Romeo"
2. Ludacris, "Southern Hospitality"
3. Missy Elliott, "Get Ur Freak On"
4. Jay-Z, "H To The Izzo"
5. Freelance Hellraiser, "A Stroke of Genius"

"One More Time" is being discounted from my list because I first heard it around October 2000. By the way "Raise Up" is a great call, Michaelangelo; the first time I heard it easily represents the funnest dance experience I had this year.

Ian, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, the funnest dance experience that didn't involve "Stronger", "The Humpty Dance", or bisexual porn on widescreen projectors.

Ian, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Southern Hospitality", "Who's That Girl?", "Is That Your Bitch?", "Clint Eastwood", "Fat Lip", or something like that. I haven't heard the new Mystikal song on the radio yet; that's way up there.

Kris, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>>>>gorillaz - 19-2000>>>>outkast - ^ms. jackson^>>>so solid crew - ^21 seconds^>>daft punXoR - ^digital love^>nelly - ^ride wid me^

Already did this on the Top 5 LPs thread, but here goes again:-

1. Cher - The Music's No Good Without You

2. Streets - Has It Come To This

3. So Solid Crew - 21 Seconds

4. Kylie - Can't Get You etc.

5. Daniel Bedingfield (spelt correctly this time) - Gotta Get Thru' This

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DJ Pied Piper and four others.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Daft Punk, Missy, Jaxx, So Solid, and lets chuck in "Hard To Explain" by The Strokeses, why not.

Tom, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So far... ('cos I think there's lots of good'uns I still haven't heard yet):

1. Daft Punk - Digital Love
2. Röyksopp - Eple
3. Stereolab - Capt. Cheezychord
4. Destiny's Child - Bootylicious
5. Björk - Hidden Place

Best 'should-have-been-a-single': "Bad Babysitter" by Princess Superstar

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On principle, I try not to answer best-of-the-year questions until the year is actually over--I mean, I didn't even hear Elastica's "The Bitch Don't Work" until yesterday. Not that it's all that good or anything, but... I mean, it'll take some doing to dislodge "Pyramid Song" and "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" from my personal podium...

Incidentally, remind me to tell you the backstory on Princess Superstar sometime. (The album's not out until January in the U.S.)

Douglas, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Digital Love - Daft Punk (wasn't One More Time last year?) < br> 2. Sunrise/The Trees - Pulp
3. Soul Sound - Sugababes
4. Get Ur Freak On - Missy
5. Radio #1 - Air
damn, there were so many good singles this year.

scott p., Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crystal - New Order Regular Girl - K Nothihg Really Ends - dEUS Pyramid Song - Radiohead Thing On A String - Fireside

Alacran, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

was "Ms. Jackson" released at the end of last year or at the beginning of this one? Anyway, that + "Freak" + "We Need A Resolution" + "Romeo" + "Ugly" + "Pyramid Song" (honorable mentions: "Ride Wit Me", "Bouncin' Back"- which, if I obtain a better quality recording, is a contender for single of the year imho, "A Stroke of Genius" - which i forgot to include as my focus group write- in vote, "My Red Hot Car" )

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) Britney -- Anticipating. 2) 112 -- Peaches & Cream. 3) Toya -- I Do 4) Jay-Z -- H.O.V.A. 5) Nivea -- Don't Mess With The Radio

Other contendas include every Ja Rule single, R. Kelly -- Fiesta (remix), LFO -- Every Other Time, Blink 182 -- Rock Show, Dixie Chicks -- If I Fall, Toby Keith -- I'm just talking about tonight, Ginuwine -- Differences, Usher -- U Remind Me, Ludacris -- Southern Hospitality.

Manohman has this been a great year.

1. Ol' Dirty Bastard - "Sussudio"
2. Kylie - "Can't Get You Outta My Head"
3. Daft Punk - "One More Time"
4. Mya - "Free"
5. N' Sync - "Pop"

Wheeler, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could barely think of one album this year. Singles, though...I feel normal for a change! 2001 really was excellent.

1. Missy Elliot-Get Ur Freak On 2. Super Furry Animals-(Rings) Around the World 3. Basement Jaxx-Where's Your Head At 4. A*Teens-Halfway Around the World 5. Nelly-Ride Wit Me

Arthur, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. N*E*R*D-Lapdance 2. Daft Punk-Aerodynamic 3. Outkast-The Whole World 4. Jay Z-HOVA (although I would gladly subsitute "Takeover") 5. Stephen Malkmus-Jenny And The EssDog

Dan Gibson, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Sum 41 - Fat Lip
2. O-Town - All or nothing
3. A-Teens - can't remember the title
4. Wyclef - Perfect Gentleman
5. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again (only in hope they will put on skimpy outfits again)

james, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Missy Elliott - One Minute Man // Aaliyah - More Than A Woman // Destiny's Child - Bootylicious // Busta Rhymes - Break Ya Neck // Pink - Get This Party Started

Haven't heard Kylie enough to truly assess her stature in the Grand Scheme O Things, but, yeah, you know.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, wait. Dump Pink for Janet's "Son of a Gun (Remix)". And then dump THAT for Janet's "Someone To Call My Lover (So So Def Remix)".

David Raposa, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James, are you thinking of "Upside Down" by the A Teens? I forgot that one too. I think the top 100 singles this year would all be great.

maura, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Daft Punk played on pop radio in the U.S.? I've only heard it on a college station.

Is this more like "favorite songs of the year" or were all these songs released as singles?

Mark, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wasn't that the daft punk song that was in a gap ad? doesn't that make it count, then?

maura, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As far as my list goes, "One More Time" was played on MTV, so of course it was a single. And in "Sussudio", ODB says he's "dropping this single on the charts, letting you know, hey, the kid has heart."

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You can trust the lists of UK posters cuz we can buy singles in our shops.

The Daft Punk I'm talking about is "Digital Love" not "One More Time" which was released last year.

I think there might well have been 100 ace singles put out this year and will spend the rest of this evening trying to list them since work has melted my brain.

Tom, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why does it matter which station you've heard it on as long as it was on radio? That's how US Singles work.

Ally, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not-yet-mentioned: R. Kelly, "Feelin' on Your Booty," remix.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Ally, by that logic I could listen to the Northwestern radio station and consider 40-minute Zorn compositions "singles."

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not to nitpick, but many college/non-profit stations play album cuts, and I was just trying to get a definition of what constitutes a single. Probably being played on MTV is the best definition in the U.S., when you think about it.

Mark, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hear Daft Punk on the radio all the time and I don't listen to college radio.

Kris, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I see plenty of singles for sale in U.S. record shops. What's wrong with just asking best songs of the year?

bnw, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, that's the one! Thanks Kris!

james, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best tracks of the year would be a separate thread with slightly different criteria - just as albums are often separated from compilations.

Tom, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've yet to see any Jaxx on MTV. We need a bottom five thread as well.

bnw, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now, if only The Avalanches would put out "A Different Feeling" as a single, I'd know *exactly* what my number one would be ...

I'm still pretty sure "Digital Love" would be my number one though.

The worst: "Crawling" by Linkin Park. No doubt there. Turns my stomach even to think about it.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Anything that gets played on MTV" = 5 bands, total. Even if we expand it to M2, that's like nothing. I don't know about the rest of you, but at least HALF the singles I see on the "new release" shelf at Tower in NYC are imports. They don't release singles for sale in the U.S. with as much frequency as in other markets, and when they do it is in limited quantities. Indeed, for qualification on the Billboard charts, YOU CAN BE AN ALBUM CUT. That's why half of them say ALBUM CUT on the listing.

Quite frankly, I think all we have here is bitching and moaning, and I don't like it. It's pretty damned obvious, I think, to realize that Digital Love, i.e. a (terrible! What's the matter with you people!) song that has a video and is on adverts, is a single, regardless of sales status, whilst Warrant, while still being played (strangely) on radio, is not.

If we put this list down to "songs what have been released from sale in your country", all of the Americans would have completely different lists. It's just not how it's computed on the American Top 40.

Ally, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally: Do you not like the robots who sing of love?

Also my list in no order...

1. The F Word - Can Ox 2. Jay-Z Girls, Girls, Girls 3. R. Kelly - Feelin' On Yo Booty 4. Digital Love - DP 5. Crystal-New Order

Nothing by the Strokes.

JM, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Don't Stop Movin' - S Club 7
2. Can't Get You Out Of My Head - Kylie
3. The Way That I Found You - Ladytron
4. Supine On The Astroturf - Fosca
5. Emmanuelle Beart - Would Be Goods

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Crawling" is definitely in my top 100! The new Linkin Park single kinda sucks though.

Kris, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get MTV Europe and I see Daft Punk and Jaxx vids all the time. So there. Other stuff I'm seeing here now and want to give props too: was "More Than a Woman" released as a single? well, that gotta be in there too, then. I'm pretty sure "Run to the Sun" wasn't released as a single, so I'll take "Lapdance", I suppose. And I did enjoy "Chop Suey", but only on occasion. The charms of "Frontier Psychiatrist" haven't worn off completely yet. Mikey Bourkie,(in Seinfeld voice:) what's the deal with liking "You Rock My World"?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, I hadn't realised the position in US re singles had got to this terrible state (not even releasing 'em I mean). How then do they compile the US charts now, exactly?

Also, I've never heard the Would Be Goods, but jamesmichael's nominee is obv single of the year. ;-)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Because its supremely catchy, mitchie and it makes me go *woo-hoo*, knowwarrimean?...Ah, fuggetabahtit. I should have mentioned "Get ur freak on" and "Ms Jackson" there too. All my picks seem to be from the second half of the year.

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Whatever Roots Manuva released 2. Avalanches - since I left you 3. Charlatans - a man needs to be told 4. Missy - Get Ur Freak on 5. Kylie - Can't get you out of my head

Paul Evans, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yes... Michael Jackson -- Butterflies.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No excuses for liking "You Rock My World". None at all. It isn't 1989, is it? Good, thought not.

Talking of which: the Would-Be-Goods still going? Wonders never cease.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
