List your own winners here - and discuss the speeches, which sounded like a laugh-riot! (Bryan Ferry booed, Elton attacks Madonna etc)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

haha snow patrol "new".. nice to see they've decided to suppress their jeepster days..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

mick jones wins best producer and janne karlsson tore johansson doesn't even get nominated? lordy lordy.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Where is Mayhem nomination for best album? Are Q perhaps unaware that they have debuted at 28 in the Norwegian charts?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(er, that was only considering their shortlists, and by no means "real")

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

about time the human league got a bit of credit from the glossies, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Mick Jones actually do anything on the Libertines record though?! Everything I've read has described it as really badly produced, and what I've heard of it sounded like a demo, wtf? Do Q readers know what producers do?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That Bryan Ferry story in full.

What fucking year is this?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

A merit award to Shane MacGowan sponsored by Greenpeace... (insert punchline of your choice)

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What fucking year is this?

Good question! From that list, I'd say 2000.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Mick Jones is a terrible producer. Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads has some of the worst guitar playing I've ever heard. And it's not charmingly sloppy, in a lo-fi naive kinda way, or exciting in a scrappy punk manner, it just sounds wrong.
As for Keane...good god.
Razorlight? Razorshite more like! Arf.

stew s, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Winner: JAMELIA - SEE IT IN A BOY'S EYES

Earlier this year, in an interview with The Field magazine, Ferry, referring to the incident in 2002, described how he wished he had encountered the prime minister that night. "I would like to have heard why he feels he has the right to ruin so many lives," he said, "especially mine."

I am DEFINITELY voting Labour now

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"especially mine."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Elton John slagged off Madonna - that was the other thing that happened. Derek Bailey was unavailable for comment.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't Amy Winehouse there to slag off Elton?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Elton quote is marvellous:

"Madonna, best fucking live act? Fuck off. Since when has lip-synching been live? Anyone who lip-synchs in public when you have paid £75 to see them should be shot. That's me off her fucking Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No."

I can see his little face turning crimson...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

He sounds like Derek Bailey in that quote

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

mick jones is a shit producer. he got lucky on the 1st libertins album as pete wasnt cracked out yet so could still sing pretty well but on this one, as he has no idea what to do except press play and record, the performances arent as good. which is a shame as there are some good songs underneath it all.

anyway, what a fucking farce of an award ceremony.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Sick Mouth, you like Bark Psychosis *and* Embrace? The mind boggles.

Brian Ferry, what a knob. Why do all the foxhunters play the class prejudice card? Nobody minds them poncing around in red coats, it's the chasing and tearing apart by dogs of defenceless animals that disgusts us. Whatever happened to the drag hunt option? You can't reason with these people though.

stew s, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Derek Bailey at the Q Awards:

"And this year's Inspiration Award goes to..."
DB stands up
DB: "Is it like this all the way through? It's not going to change by the time I reach the podium, is it? I don't quite understand these fucking award things. The business of getting an award is OK, except you're left with this useless fucking thing called an award. I mean, what am I supposed to do with it? Put it on my mantelpiece and sit and stare at it? It's kind of against nowness, isn't it? This award was made and I expect the guy who made the award knew what it was going to look like when he'd finished it even before he started making it. There's no element of surprise, nothing develops. You look at this award and you know it's never going to fucking change. I'm more interested in the atoms of alloys that went into making it rather than the crappy trinket it's turned out to be. Give the fucker to Ego Park-it. This award is a masterpiece but I have to say fuck off cunts. Nothing personal. The kind of award I might dream of getting doesn't yet exist within the available technology. That having been said I don't like awards, they're built for shitty lounges where you drink VP wine and pretend it's Chablis. No I don't like awards. I don't like them at all. If you're asking me do I like them, no I don't like them. Can Bono play his instrument? How the fuck would I know, I've never fucking heard him. Ben breaks up U2 CDs before I can listen to them. He's funny that way. But I'm sure every U2 CD is a masterpiece."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"The day war broke out..."

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

wow derek bailey must have a really big

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

All the evidence may point to Ferry being a fuckwit of the highest order, but he reportedly went to one of Spacemen 3's final gigs, and I therefore have to give him some grudging respect.

Ian Edmond (ianedmond), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh aye, he did make some cracking choons back in the day, like.

stew s, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do all the foxhunters play the class prejudice card?

Presumably because they've spoken to all the people I've spoken to who, when I suggest that their dislike of hunting is morally inconsistent, say "fuck it, it's just a bunch of rich bastards in stupid clothes anyway".

(Before the SWP street team launch in, I want to point out that I am not defending fox-hunting, but I find its criminilisation indefensible.)

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i think "See It In A Boy's Eyes" is an entirely deserving winner, not least because it is the ultimate anti-hunting single (much of the hunting fraternity's anger has as much to do with their belief that its Sherborne-educated co-writer is a "class traitor", "race traitor" or even a "nigger lover" as it has to do with killing foxes, and let's not forget the Countryside and Rights of Way Act while we're at it).

GB05? (robin carmody), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'when I suggest that their dislike of hunting is morally inconsistent, say "fuck it, it's just a bunch of rich bastards in stupid clothes anyway".'

That may be the case, but the pro-hunt lobby seem to ignore the fact that the only thing being outlawed is the killing of foxes by dogs. They're free to run around in their stupid clothes chasing a fake fox. But that would undermine their arguments. They don't consider the notion of a drag hunt for a second. Class does come into it - working class bloodsports like cock fighting etc have, quite rightly, been outlawed for years, but you don't see anyone sticking up for them.
