has ILX discussed the Youngstar remix of Dizzee's Stand Up Tall and it's attendant b-side Give U More?

cos while the remix's cheapness and slightly corny guitar sounds arent great, they have a certain rough, low budget, imperfect, grime-ish quality that isnt there in most of showtime, which on the whole, while good, is somewhat sheened out production-wise. i like give u more a whole lot for the same reason. well that and the fact its more grime-like and it features d double, who is tragically under-used.

not the youngstar remix so much (which i don't think is too good btw), but 'give u more' has been widely praised. it's fantastic. pity d double e doesn't actually get a verse.

i just like the rawness of the remix.

give u more is great and should have been on the album. it has ENERGY which i think is missing a bit from showtime.

the new b-side to dream is as good as give you more, if not better. its rawer than the album, production-wise too, which is something i wish showtime had.

what is it called??

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

is this real?

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

are we about to enter into an abbott and costello routine?

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel mighty real.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's actually called 'is this real' though.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

its called 'trapped'

its undeniably cool but am i gonna get a pasting if i say that its almost overbearing how continuumy this and much of showtime sounds? with the foul play wailing? like it was delib produced with reynolds in mind

i'm not making a stand on this tho

also, not explicitly linked to the above point mind, something that i think gets passed over with dizzee as sui generic grime force of nature is how attentive a listener he is, in his own tracks (which to be fair are never overcooked but also often seem manically intricately rescrawled over, crosshatched pentimento what have you in comparison to other grime's exciting one-idea riddimic moneyshot economics) as well as a listener of other music; he's obv a very deep digger whether its dsouth or duran duran or whodini or even watching totp2 for the 'happy talk' sample in the first place. how that affects his music, meh who can say, but for me stand up tall seems a burst of unpondered joy (love those goofy scratches!) compared to the rest of showtime. that said 'sut''s chorus could just as likely be a product of fiesta riddim tho, but whatever.

(also this is prob a wan rehash of the old lone auteur chestnut)

also he never freestyles! those verses are precisely rhythmically honed. perhaps contradictorily e crunk had noted that those exact same lyrics sat just as well (or awkwardly? u decide) when he was doing them over random new rap beats on westwood not so long ago. but i lost the tape so him over 'juicy' is lost to me, sob

trapped is the other b-side, on cd2. is this real is on cd1.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)
