WinMX etc. etc. (I'm a new to this place so I don't know if this question has been asked before but I'm curious to know what people think)

I do own a variety of mp3 disks from various sources and I have to say for the albums I like I usually buy. Am I sucker why do I do it? Perhaps its because I like to own the music and listening it on PC can be a bit of drag. Also the quality is not as good but thats getting really anal and techy. I tend to listen to music at work so I make up disks so I don't have to lug 10 normal cd around. It's also a good thing because their are some things you just can't buy like for example my almost complete collection of the Chris Morris radio 1 shows broadcast in 94. Copy protection disks might kill MP3 but I reckon they will either be boycotted or cracked pretty soon by us listeners. I noticed on the Need to Know website two Japenese students have recently been busted under Japanese law for using WinMX. It states that in Japan merely having a copy of copyrighted work on a hardrive can land you in jail. What got them was their extensive collection of "Warez" (copies of Photoshop and Microsoft 2000 etc). I would not be surprised if the American Recording industry is keeping a close eye on what happens and may well force, through political action, a change in copyright laws. My use of MP3 would come under "fair use", an area which is always under debate. The recording industry do not believe it is fair and state that you buy the rights to listen to the work from the presented media only, I like others say it's mine and I'll do whatever I want with it and you can can only get mad if I start making copies to sell out of the back of an Escort in Hackney. One last thing Metallica only got pissed off at Napster because studio demos ended up on the server. Their demo tapes were making a bundle of cash even before they got signed cos their fans are so into them. They could record the phonebook and it would still go platinum. Fair use is our only answer it would seem.
