Smoking Popes: C or D

They have been talkied about here or there, either in reference to Morrissey's interest in them, their semi-hit "Need You Around" or that song's similarity to the later "Last Nite" by those Strokes. But no one has asked the question, until now. Sorry, i am building this up a little too much.

They may not have been the greatest, but i say classic. Every release has more good songs than bad. If you are going to listen to pop-punk, you could do a hell of a lot worse than Get Fired, Born to Quit or Destination Faliure (91-98 & Live aren't to bad either).

Well, considering they *both* sounds Smiths-like, which in turn was because of the Motown rhythm...

(Is your real name Fred Burrows or are you referencing the one MST3K episode?)

I brought up how much the Strokes reminded me of Smoking Popes on a Strokes thread. It's the crooning.

I *love* "Need You Around" and actually think it sounds more like "Hard to Explain" or "The Modern Age".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Because of the 'mono-crooning' on those tracks.

Dud, Chicago-boosterism at its worst.

Wake me up when the Strokes put out a song as good as "Rubella". I liked that one, even if it has the worst lyrics ever.

Rubella has the worst lyrics ever, i am guessing that you have never listened to the lower end of pop-punk (Good Charlotte lyrics are a hundred times worse). I am saying that in the realm of (a somewhat worthless, once we entered the mid-eighties)a subgenre known as pop-punk, Sps stand out. They combine straight forward/dramatic lyrics and croning (see the originals on their Party's Over cover album) with an amped up early 90's sound. Admittedly, if you are not at least a little fond of the 90's alt-grunge-punk-pop, then you probably don't give a shit.

Fred Burrows, HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

fred burrows, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought as much.

"Ladies and gentlemen...FRED BURROWS!"

Rubella has great lyrics, if you understand the joke, which is that Rubella is the scientic name for German Measles. If you still think it has dumb lyrics, you can kizz my ass!

Anyway, I say stone cold CLASSIC, particularly the song "Megan", which is amazing from beginning to end.

Everyone in the world knows that Rubella is German Measles. It's a damn catchy song, but the lyrics are not clever.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides which, I actually HAD rubella when I first heard the song.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It can't have worse lyrics than Stone Temple Pilot's "Creep"

eight years pass...

it's been nearly 10 years since this band has come up?? Damn near criminal. Their first album is still amazing.
