Like all years for music, it's been as good as you wanted it to be.

― Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello on the motherfucking money and anybody who says "No" should piss off and shut up.

Like all years for music, it's been as good as you wanted it to be.

Quite. So this year has been much more enjoyable than last for me, for instance.

Filthy empiricists!

― My Dinner With Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

strangely i'm really liking the modern-rock kinda shit lately. not sure why. but some of my fave albums in that vein include:

my chemical romance, three cheers for sweet revenge
green day, american idiot
atreyu, the curse
taking back sunday, tell all your friends
turing machine, zwei
hot snakes, audit in progress

― Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dirty objectivist!

― Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Radical subjectivist! Oh wait, that's me.

Girls Aloud-The Show. Nuff fucking said

The threat to my response doesn't intimidate me in the least. No, this has not been a good year for music, personally. Though there's been some pleasant stuff like the Espers s/t, the almost-there return to form of Björk, the fourcolor record, the Oren Ambarchi, and the Rosy Parlane. Oh, and the fantastic song "The Valleys" by Electrelane with those retro organs and beautiful harmonies. But then again, I haven't heard the new Alice Coltrane (I'm a bit scared of this one, she's one of my idols), Keith Fullerton Whitman (nor his collaboration with my dear friend Greg Davis).

And I forgot to mention how SMiLE was an utter disappointment for me. The arrangements are nice and true but the voice and the production (too slick) are a no-no.

― Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

lukey otm!!

― mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

no.

IMO, it turned out to be not quite as empty as I thought it was over the summer. That's true that any given year's music is only as good as you want it to be. I thought 2003 was tremendous - at the least, the best music has been since this decade started, especially in hiphop and top 40. I guess it's possible that 2003 gave me such a positive hope for the future that I was just setting myself up for having 2004 be a huge letdown without realizing it. But still, I have yet to hear an album solid enough to have made it into any of my previous top 5's from pretty much any other year, at least over the past 15 years.* So maybe it's a combination of elements. There's plenty of time left this year though, so who knows what will happen.

*Oh yeah, that doesn't include SMiLE, which is my album of the year so far, but I've never had a re-issue at #1 before, and I know it's not technically a re-issue, but it feels like one.

Like all years for music, it's been as good as you wanted it to be.

Uhm, no. Wishing doesn't make it so.

― Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's been a great year for music. OTOH, I've been consuming it much more than usual, so I've had lots more to choose from. But it's the first year where I'll be sad to see albums not quite make my top ten, rather than trying to round out the top ten with albums I only kind of love.

― jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's been a pretty good year, though not as good as last year, from what I've heard. Some bright spots: N.E.R.D., Devendra Banhart, Black Keys, Jason Forrest, The Streets.

― o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been okay, I bought some old Annihilator albums and I've almost completed my Alice Cooper collection.

I think I have around 15 - 20, albums that were released this year...Big & Rich is probably the best.

― jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i think every year is great but then i have low standards, the last few months have been fantastic and we still have a pas/cal album to look forward to.

Sonic Youth and Junior Boys

Its been a good year for hip-hop singles, although most of my favorites (3 kings, still tippin, who gives a ... where you from,) didn't chart very high.

― djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been a great year for music for me as I have had my head wedged so far up music's ass that I can taste what the rock is cooking.

― Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Beat that for pertinent and succinct analysis, Christgau!

― Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn right!
