Maybe tour diaries, documentarians following them on spiritual sojourns to far off locales, chronicles of their descent into MADNESS, et cetera and whatnot. Tell about here.

Nickalicious like:

Meeting people is easy. - Radiohead go from these guys to "MOST IMPORTANT BAND EVER".
Genghis Blues - Paul Pena goes to Tuva.
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads go from the beginning of their tenure to their Remain In Light heyday.
Incident at Rainbow Bridge - Jimi Hendrix goes to hang out with/play for a bunch of hippies who talk too much.
Power of Sound Salad - Lightning Bolt goes to AMERICA.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't the Cracked Actor that one with bowie that was pretty damn fine. showing all that cut-n-paste malarkey with the words/lyrics etc ..

Depeche Mode 101 is simply one of the best documentaries on music ever made. The accounting settlement and counting of t-shirt sales cash for the Rose Bowl show is classic. The fans in the bus getting all hopped up for the shows juxtapozed with the bad in their underwear and trying to figure out what to shout out to the crowd -- awesome.

The new DVD also has some interesting interviews with the band, David Gahan in particular.

The Band Who Could Be King, about Half Japanese. Not a lot of tour stuff as I remember but still very entertaining, especially David Fair and the Fair parents.
Instrument, the nice and artsy Fugazi movie.
Another vote for The Power of Salad and Milkshakes, the Lightning Bolt documentary.
And another vote for Don't Look Back, which is pretty incredible.

gimme shelter is one of my favorite movies ever

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

On the flip side, Rattle and Hum is arguably the worst rockumentary ever - meandering and phony. The scene in Harlem feels super contrived.

Filz, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

200 Motels - Frank Zappa's imaginary tour world

big chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I just watched Cocksucker Blues and Blank Generation a few nights ago. Unfortunately, neither one was very good. The extras on Cocksucker Blues were pretty entertaining, though.

darin, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

nick cave and the bad seeds have a good one. title escapes me

kephm, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

where did you see extras for CS blues, darin? the only copy i could find near me was a bootleg video. btw, i thought that bootleg video was really great.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Manowar - Hell on Wheels

absolutely surreal.

Avi (Avi), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Decline of Western Civilization I, II and III....although the last one is more depressing than anything else.

DOA

Blank Generation

The Truth About De-Evolution (though this probably doesn't count).

The Nick Cave one, I believe, is The Road to God Knows Where

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Those Manowar videos are terrifying. They have to be seen to be believed.

danh (danh), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter,

I found the CS Blues on DVD at Clinton St. Video in Portland, OR for rental. My complaints with the film basically boil down to poor sound and video quality. The extras also include several early 70's interviews with Jagger, extra live concerts, promo clips, and Mick's wedding.

Renaldo & Clara
Eat The Document
Don't Look Back

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Nick Cave's The Road to God Knows Where is out on DVD (together with Live at Paradiso)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

are we talking strictly tour docs here? Charlie Is My Darling, the stones in ireland circa 1965 (though it looks more like 1945) is pretty great for that kind of thing.

For more general docs, of relatively recent stuff, I loved Dig! despite having no interest in either band. Jandek on Corwood took me a couple of times to get through without falling asleep, but it kind of stayed with me more than I expected it to.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

Great scene in a bad rockumentary :

blunt (blunt), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

another state of mind
decline of wester civilization
the great rock and roll swindle

i'd add in
1991-the year punk broke (just for the performances)

and maybe-
the flaming lips dvd (pretty great story!)
