MTV: in decline?!?!?

No, I'm serious. Here in the UK, MTV's been having to cut the amount it charges to cable providers after one major provider threatened to drop them over charges. The same article also notes that MTV has been getting stiff competition from Emap's music channels (Kiss, Q, Smash Hits) on Telewest, and NTL (another major cable provider in the UK) has recently made a deal to start showing Emap channels from next year. And outside the UK, MuchMusic is getting a bit of a reputation as being Like MTV Only Good, and this isn't . Add to this recent comments from high-up in MTV Exec land that post 9/11 maybe we really shouldn't rock so hard, which might strike some as a bit, well, square.

Under attack from cable providers and youunger rival regional niche channels, and apparently losing the will to rock. Not to put too fine a point on it, is MTV getting a bit, well, past it?

MTV was set up to pay off Summer Redstone's bills after he bought Viacom, which makes him the most influential person in pop, ever.

Not only that, but they're stinking traitors. Everyone from the Ancient Greeks on down knows that to fire up a nation to martial frenzy the music's gotta rock! By playing Stink's "Fragile" 12 times a day they're softening the US up to fall into the enemy's hands like overripe fruit from a tree!

Yeah! MTV really should be playing Rob G's masterful (and inadvertedly topical) gabber anthem "Mad As Hell" (Sampled from "Network") 24/7 if they really want to be serious about using their station for propaganda purposes. They really are turning into a bunch of fuddie-duddies, aren't they?!?! ;)

I've just noticed an incomplete sentence in my initial rant!

"and this isn't" = "and this isn't the only new station I've heard suchs things said about."

There was a version of a music channel I'd like to see that I post a while back that I think would woop MTVs ass in the US. I'm not gonna bother to find it, but I'd say that yes, definitely, MTV is getting lame and has been for about 6 years or more. VH-1, the once for Old Farts only station, rocks in remarkably better ways than MTV and just plain has more variety. MTV would be the piss-poorest radio station in the world, but on television it has little competition. We need to change that.

MTV just sucks. Much Music sucks less. VH1 has informative programming every once in a while which makes them appealing. I turn to college tv networks when I want to see interesting music videos, however, I can't listen to college radio for more than 7 minutes.

I forgot to say that VH1 is airing Ren and Stimpy cartoons now which makes them even better-not music related but greatly appreciated.

VH1's Rebecca Rankin's transformation from newslady to rock chick is disheartening. (No more exposes on the porn/rock connection, Becca? Hmm? Come on, now - stop diddling with the lead singer from FUEL, for the luvva - the Lit singer's much cuter.) MuchMusic shows VIDEOS more often than not; consequently, they are the best by a wide margin.

Does anyone remember the Z Channel?
