The ultimate ILM album

OK, so there will never be an album that gets unanimous approval. But what album, if put to the time-honoured "classic/dud" test on these boards, would garner the fewest "dud" responses EVAH and is therefore the ultimate ILM album and a veritable mirror to our musical souls?

Leave it to Peter and I to make the same variety of smartass comment.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably _Loveless_ or _Sign O' The Times_.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i was even going to preface my image with "clearly, it's".

That's your answer to everything 'though, isn't it?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyle, dude. Let it go. (Lean back and let the vibe just flow. God, I love Prince.)

There was a thread where we attempted to find a *band* that nobody around here hates. I searched but couldn't find it. I believe the correct answer was XTC.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Or possibly not

But in a perfect world,......it would be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

couldn't have been XTC, there's a thread about how horrible they are, after all. I can't remember what was proven by science to be the best album ever as judged by ILM but it was something unsurprising.

The closest thing to someone disliking it on ILX was someone saying they liked Super Ae better.

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

What album is that? I might hate it.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i veto XTC, unless someone can clearly demonstrate their worth to me via cd-r.

Never heard it. I'll pretend to hate it if you think it'll shake things up a bit.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can send it to you. Its really good

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

master of reality is way more ultimate than paranoid.

Cheers! I don't have gmail or anything fancy like that, though. I might try downloading a couple of their tunes now to see if I like 'em. Any suggestions?

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

first track from VCN
super going
super coming (or whatever track 2 is called)
7 (boriginal)
seadrum
house of sun

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably a Shangri Las greatest hits collection. If not than a Missy album.

I have a zip of the album I just sent to someone if you want it (AIM?), but I'd download:

7 Borginal
Super Go!!! → Shine In, Shine On!

The first four tracks from Vision Creation Newsun are a good start I think if you're not up for getting the whole thing

Circle, Heart, Star, Spiral

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hey can you gmail me the zip? i only have super ae and those other older albums.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Kid A right? What happened to Kid A? Didn't you all vote for it?

danh (danh), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've now listened to couple of Boredoms tracks. Not my cup of tea at all, I'm afraid.

I don't know. Maybe not this particular album, but I'm leaning towards...

I mean everyone likes Motorhead. Right? Am I right?

darin, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Funkadelic's Maggot Brain would certainly have a strong showing.

Those that don't aren't worth talking to, in any case.

Pretzel Logic was my serious answer, BTW. It seems like everyone can get down with Steely Dan.

Helios Creed (orion), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Colossal Youth?

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I prefer the Eagles to Steely Dan. I know I prefer Journey.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

But would you say Steely Dan were dud?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really but I'd still balk a bit at it being the 'ultimate', though I guess I wouldn't fight too hard. I haven't heard the two albums mentioned so far though.

The only albums on this thread that I've heard and like are

Fun House
Paranoid
Closer
Maggot Brain
Loveless
Kid A

I'm d/ling all the Boredoms I can find and really like the two tracks I got from VCN. No fucking way am I standing by and letting Guns n Roses or Daft Punk take this, even though both of them have moments as well.

What about:

Kraftwerk
Donna Summer
70s Miles
Here Come the Warm Jets
Heroes

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

All 6 of those from my first list are fucking awesome albums BTW.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be hard to decide on one particular Kraftwerk or Bowie or Eno album. There are just so many good ones from each. (Not to say I like Bowie, really; I never got into him, but his fans are probably just as catty about what his "best" album is.)

Helios Creed (orion), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

haha This may come pretty close.

AVALANCHE ROCK IT

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Thursday, 7 October 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably the Homosexuals. It's suitably twee, has "hip" cachet, works as a springboard for more threads about "rockism", and isn't American. (Never mind that few ILMers are willing to admit that two of the three discs that constitute 'Astral Glamour' consist of the worst sucking noodling shit of the highest order.)

Mumba, Thursday, 7 October 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never, in all the time of me mentioning them, seen anything anti about World Domination Enterprises. Closest being "haven't heared them".
