Remixes that are better than the original, but only make sense if you've heard the original

Does this make any sense? I've heard a handful of remixes that I prefer to the originals, but I'm guessing that they would make no sense to someone who hasn't heard the original song. Maybe it's a vocal clip taken out of context that you need a knowledge of the original context....

In any case, if the remix is really good it'll stand on its own, but does this idea make sense to anyone else?

Also, one instance of "original" from the topic. I'm just really redundant lately.

basia - third time lucky (johnny vicious mix)

the remix is a great dancefloor track on it's own, but once you hear how insipid the original is and how mr vicious has taken the bumbling vocal and made it sound both dissonant and euphoric, the whole thing just falls into place.

there are several others tracks like this, but that's the first one that popped into my head when i read your post

"its own" , not "it's own" grrr

I love "This is Hardcore" by Pulp, but I've listen to the Tipsy remix a lot more. It's just amazingly cool and weird. The actual lyrics and tune are more or less gone, although bits of it come in now and again. It's the perfect nomination for this thread.

I don't think you need to here the original of "Ante Up" to understand that the "Ante Up Remix" is fucking awesome!

They're pretty similar though (and I agree).

Yeah, even though the backing track is probably just about the same for some reason (is it pitched up slightly? Busta) the remix feels so much more propulsive. But I don't think hearing the original changes how you hear it, it just makes you appreciate how fantastic guest spots can make a great song even greater.

everything on the second disc of the new laibach compilation falls into this category. although whether laibach could ever really make *sense* is a moot point.

"Loaded" is better than the original, but does make more sense as a song when you hear "I'm Losing More..."

Because it's scientically impossible to improve on!

BUT it was improved upon, DAMMIT!

"Time Management" (remix of the Chrono Trigger theme):

eight years pass...

the Pet Shop Boys 12" remix of Girls & Boys is a sterling example of this imo. The augmentation is subtle, but the PSB's layered, echoing synths & flourishes of disco percussion make all the difference!
