how do prodicers get that awesome, intense piano fade in sound like at the beginning of "Roundabout" by Yes and "The Heart Of Rock n Roll" by Huey Lewis and the News?

I imagine they record a piano note and play it backwards.

"Awesome" should never be used in the same sentence as "Huey Lewis".

But, liks Caspar suggests, I'm guessing it involves simply playing a tape backwards.

"Roundabout" and "Heart of Rock & Roll" are about 15 years apart, so I wouldn't be surprised if separate technologies were employed.

An echo can be set to play backwards. I don't precisely know how, but my old band did it. (I was reading a magazine or eating pizza or something while the guitar player and producer were doing it.)
