It seems to me, that the most cost effective to carry around music yould be an mp3 CD player.
But what do I know, I still use a 'Realistic AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player' from the 80's that plays everything half a tone out. Certainly adds an edge to Joy Division.

how the ipod sucked all the joy out of listening to music

"I am acutely aware that everything I have just said is horrifying and aggravating to a great many people."
Nope, mostly just think you are an idiot. I wonder if newspapers around the turn of the century had articles like "how the car is sucking all the fun out of trips to the general store"?
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 October 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)
it was only horrifying and aggravating because she managed to include just about every cliche -- like, after the first couple paragraphs i was thinking, "is she gonna get nostalgic for mixtapes? is she? is she?"
― sarahel, Monday, 10 October 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, these articles, even though I mostly agree with a few of the arguments re the death of physical media, mostly just annoy the hell out of me at this point.

i am optimistic that there are interesting points one could make in an article like this, unfortunately, this article made no interesting points.

If there's one thing that itunes/mp3s are unequivocally good for it's taking the hassle out of making mixes.
