What makes YOU turn the radio OFF?

I imagine a lot of you can relate to never really choosing silence. At my grumpiest, most tired, most headache-y, I'd always rather have SOME kind of music playing than none at all.

That said, while driving, if generic R&B is playing, and some faceless 'sistah' is cooing and doing trills and shit, I've been known to snap off the radio in frustration.

when every FM station is playing "The Reason" and the college radio station is playing Modest Mouse, I turn the radio off.

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 7 October 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

although that doesn't really happen anymore, especially now that i'm in nyc sans car.

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 7 October 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it may be the extreme compression used by most FM stations that makes me want to turn radios off when I hear them. I become sick of most all music with this quality almost immediately, and would rather hear CDs or cassettes or AM or no-music. I can understand why they do it, but it's too much.

Pangolino (ricki spaghetti), Thursday, 7 October 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do they do it?

wombatX (wombatX), Thursday, 7 October 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It makes the signal sound as loud as possible without distorting, which can be to give a kind of strong presence for finding the station, to draw attention, and to make sure everything can be clearly heard even at lower volumes and in environments where other sounds are present.

fucking hell morning shows are unlistenable. what is all that noise going on in the background on things like Stern? there are always taped voices doing soundbytes, sound effects, it sounds like SHIT, there is no sense of depth of space in the sound mix, everything is just cluttered on top of other sounds. Horrible. I hate it.

95% of my radio-listening time is at the office, tuned to the lite-rock (or whatever) station. And they play the same fucking '70s-present songs over and over - I'd be truly suprised if their playlist numbered in the triple digits. I don't control the radio (thank g-d for Discman!) so I can't turn it off. But if I could, these five would never be heard again. Worst to fifth worst:

1.Michael Bolton, "When A Man Loves A Woman"
2.Counting Crows, "Big Yellow Taxi"
3.Phil Collins, [tie] "True Colours", "Another Day In Paradise"
4.Sheryl Crow, "The First Cut Is The Deepest"
5.Cher, "The Shoop Shoop Song" (Actually not hated, it's OK but certainly can't match the original, one of my alltime faves)

Hmmm...you know, I just now noticed that all but one of these are covers, two that I never liked, two that I always liked (in their original versions.) Odd.

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

When I'm flipping through stations and find a song I don't care for on one station, switch to the next, and the EXACT SAME SHITSTAIN OF A SONG IS PLAYING.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

adverts - even on pirates, where they are amusing the first couple of times but then become ammusing. I rally find it hard to listen to any radio that isn't bbc

During Yankees games:

The wonder of it all...

Take a chance, make it happen
Pop the cork, fingers snappin'
You and me, we can have it all...
Life is good, life is sweet
Grab yourself a front row seat
And we'll meet, and have a ball...
Yeah, let's live, for the wonder of it all...
